I love a cozy bedroom as much as anyone, but as soon as the days get longer and the temperatures rise, I can’t wait to ditch my heavy quilt, throw open the curtains and start spring-ifying (can we make that a word?) my space. This time of year is especially good for a mini bedroom makeover because odds are, you’re already doing some spring cleaning. Why not add a few fun decorating ideas to the mix?
The pro designers I spoke to all agreed that the best way to update your bedroom for spring is to focus on small changes, like swapping in lightweight sheets or adding fresh flowers to your bedside table — no need to totally rethink your space. And you don’t need to spend a ton of money either. Opening your windows for fresh air? That’s free!
Rest easy because a lighter, brighter spring bedroom is just a few steps away. To make it even dreamier, check out these secrets for an amazing-smelling space.
Open the windows
It sounds obvious, but you might be surprised what an impact this can have on your mood and your space. “I do this every day, as early as I can, to literally refresh the air in my bedroom,” says Fabuloso cleaning expert Rosa Picosa. While you’re at it, check the window sills for dirt and dust. “They’re one of those spots that probably aren’t part of your regular to-do list,” she says — so now’s the time to give them a quick wipe-down with a damp sponge and all-purpose cleaner.

If it’s in your budget, switch out your drapes for something lighter. Stacey Breezeel, co-owner of Shine Interior Design Studio and a member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), takes a layered approach to window treatments. “Pairing a natural woven shade with drapery panels gives you flexibility for both light control and insulation,” she says. She likes sheer curtains, too, because they “introduce an effortless airiness while still offering privacy.”
Keeping your existing curtains? Treat them to a trip to the dry cleaner or through the washing machine. You don’t need to do this often, just once a year or so, says Picosa.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the price of these delicate curtains. Though they’re made from polyester like many other sheer panels, they stood out thanks to their chic colors, including navy, burnt orange, soft gray and the sage green pictured — all of which will make them look more expensive than they are.
Bamboo shades are a tried-and-true solution that designers love because they can go with any style, from traditional to beachy to mid-century modern. This cordless pick comes in more than a dozen sizes and four colors, and you can’t beat the price: At around $45, it’s one of the least expensive high-quality bamboo shades I’ve found.
Blackout curtains are great at night, but during the day they can look heavy. Not the case with these subtly textured panels from Target, which Breezeel says she’s “wild about.” In beige and off-white (the brand calls the color “sour cream”), they instantly freshen up a room, she adds. “And the blackout lining is a huge plus for enhancing sleep quality.”
Declutter a little
Fear not: This isn’t meant to be an all-day affair. Set a timer for 15 or 30 minutes and tackle a single space in your bedroom. Maybe your nightstand is stacked with tissues and water glasses or you need to organize a section of your closet. “Let go of that it-has-to-be-done-in-one-day idea,” says Picosa.
An easy way to restore order to your space, she adds, is to look out for natural dumping grounds. If you see stuff (extra pillows, bags, shoes) accumulating in a certain spot, put a basket there. Containers make everything look neater!
A basket with a lid keeps things contained to the max — no clothes hanging over the edge or peeks at a dusty pile of shoes. Just make sure if you’re using something like this that you don’t fall into the “out of sight, out of mind” trap, where stuff just sits in the basket for ages. This is meant to be a temporary holding area, not a permanent one!
More of a minimalist? The thin lines of this metal basket virtually disappear when it’s not full. It comes in a few other neutrals, including black, white and gray, perfect for getting that quiet luxury look.
This sturdy solution is woven mostly from recycled polyester, so it’s designed to take a beating. The square shape can stand alone or fit inside a cubby storage system — plus you can add labels with the brand’s special kits, which tie securely to the rope.
Anyone who appreciates a pop of color will be transfixed by the marvelous marigolds, reds and burgundies of this basket. It’s handwoven in Ghana from elephant grass, which is both lightweight and durable. Leather handles add a special finishing touch.
Swap out your bedding
Farewell, flannel and hello, crisp cotton! Now’s the time to refresh your bed with lightweight, breathable sheets and blankets in bright colors or pastels. Molly Carter, owner of Molly Erin Designs is a big fan of linen sheets; to top them, Galey Grimes, owner of Galey Grimes Interiors, loves a linen or quilted matelassé coverlet. “They bring a lightweight yet cozy feel that’s perfect for the warmer months,” she says.

If you’re someone who tends to get cold, just layer up. “Use a duvet insert that works well with your climate, then add a quilt and throw blankets to add a softer, functional touch,” suggests ASID member Natalie Biles, who co-owns Shine Interior Design Studio.
While you’re changing the sheets, use this as an opportunity to wash your mattress cover or protector and give the mattress itself a quick pass with a hand vacuum, says Picosa.
An ultra-soft comforter for less than $25? Dreams can come true! This top-rated Amazon pick (it has a whopping 23,000+ five-star reviews) is relatively thin and though it’s meant for all seasons, many of its fans say it’s perfect for spring and summer. You can pop it into a duvet cover or just use it as is — it comes in 15 colors that would look lovely layered under a lightweight throw blanket.
Speaking of lightweight throws, this coverlet would brighten up any bed. (The crisp blue reminds me of a cloudless sky.) Though it’s quilted, this blanket doesn’t have any fill, so it’s thin enough for those warmer evenings. The shams are sold separately, but they’re a total steal at $20 for two — and they also come in white so you can mix and match for a more personalized look.
“A textured cotton or woven throw in a neutral or pastel hue adds just the right seasonal touch without overpowering the room,” says Grimes, who recommends this pick from Parachute. You can’t go wrong with earth tones, and this throw delivers two looks in one: On one side, the ribbed knit looks mostly tan, and on the other, it’s more white. It’s made from organic cotton that’s soft and slightly stretchy, perfect for getting it to drape just so over the foot of your bed.
I’m in the middle of testing linen sheets, and this set from Quince has become a favorite for many reasons: It has a smooth, crisp feel that stays cool against my skin, it hasn’t shrunk much in the wash and the price is one of the best I’ve seen. Good-quality linen bedding often starts around $250, so this is a definite deal.
Incorporate a spring scent
Think light and fresh. No need to go floral if that’s not your vibe! “I love using a linen spray or diffuser with soft, natural notes like white tea, citrus blossom, or fresh-cut grass to instantly brighten a space,” says Grimes.
Biles opts for clean scents “that feel like a breath of fresh air — soapy, sea-salty fragrances that evoke a light, clean atmosphere.” If you’re burning candles or using linen sprays or diffusers, look for eco-friendly products fragranced with essential oils. Try to buy candles made from non-petroleum-based soy or coconut wax with lead-free cloth or wooden wicks.
All you need is two or three drops of this essential oil blend in an ultrasonic diffuser to fill your room with the bright scent of lemon, bergamot and sea salt. Biles loves it for waking up a space!
High-end laundry-care company The Laundress is famous for its detergents and fabric sprays, which Grimes uses to mist sheets. Though she likes all six scents of this spray, Classic is a good starting point, with notes of lily of the valley, jasmine, sweet musk and sandalwood.
This beeswax candle is Made Safe certified, which means it was created with ingredients that won’t harm humans or the ecosystem. Geranium, lavender and sweet orange give it a light, citrusy fragrance that’ll make you feel like you’re lounging in a secret garden on the California coast.
Transport yourself to the spa without getting out of your PJs with a soothing lavender scent. P.F. Candle Co. is a favorite of high-end designers, and all its products are phthalate-free and vegan. Just one of these little apothecary-style jars should fill your room with fragrance for three to four months!
Another pick from Biles, this candle, with notes of citrus, salt and kelp, is for anyone who ever wishes they had a beach house. It’s made with natural soy wax and cotton braided wicks, and it gets its fragrance from therapeutic-grade essential oils.
Add a plant or fresh flowers
One of the most delightful parts of spring is all the signs of new growth — green leaves poking through the ground and branches covered in buds. Why not bring that joy inside? House plants don’t just look great; they can also boost your mood. Place a pot by a windowsill, on your bedside table or in a corner of a room.

If your thumb is more brown than green, simply fill a vase with fresh flowers or foliage. It’s another small move that seems obvious, but how many of us actually do it? “Find the perfect bud vase to set on your nightstand. Springtime is when the most beautiful, delicate flowers start to bloom (ranunculus, tulips, daffodils) and you will be so delighted to have a stem or two in your bedroom,” says Carter. “Live plants and flowers in the house will change your mood!”
Believe it or not, Amazon sells tons of live, already potted plants, thanks in part to a partnership with Costa Farms, a company that’s been around for 60 years. You can filter the choices by sunlight exposure and size, but most of the house plants are easy-care … so you won’t lie awake at night trying to remember if you did your daily watering!
“Even the smallest bud vase on a nightstand can instantly make a space feel more vibrant,” says Biles. And you only need a couple of stems to fill a vessel like this. Choose a soft color, like this muted turquoise, to complement your flowers; if you want the blooms to stand out, go for a white vase instead.
For an even more delicate look, try tinted glass bud vases. These have a ribbed design that’s right on trend, and the subtle colors feel particularly springy.
Handmade-looking pottery is having a moment, and the weathered terracotta finish of this container makes it look vintage in the best possible way. Picosa loves a chunky vase: In the winter she’ll fill it with branch or twig arrangements, then in the spring she changes them out for “something green and leafy,” she says.
Love the Nancy Meyers aesthetic? This blue-and-white vase would fit in seamlessly with the directors’ classic, breezy, cottage-inspired style. And you can never have too many flowers (or floral prints) in the spring!
Try brighter accessories
A new throw pillow, a vibrant ring dish or a cheerful painting can breathe new life into your bedroom without much effort. Even simply moving around your picture frames can give your space an updated look, says Breezeel, who will swap photos for artwork for more color and variation.
Pastels and bright colors have springtime energy; when it comes to patterns, lean into the season and play around with florals and block prints, says Biles.
Biles calls these “ridiculously soft and luxurious,” for good reason: They have a silky texture and come in a rainbow of eye-catching jewel tones, plus stripes. Just one, tossed in front of your regular pillows, can transform the look of your bed.
If you’re tight on storage space, buy decorative pillow covers, which you can remove and fold flat when you’re not using them, unlike puffy pillows. “It makes it easier to adjust your decor to the season,” says Breezeel. These have a linen-like texture and vintage-inspired botanical print that comes in dozens of color combos.
Maybe it’s a little on the nose, but how sweet is this ring dish? And I can hardly be-leaf the price, considering it’s hand-painted ceramic.
You can’t help but smile seeing this rainbow of prints, each of which features a different flower and city. They come unframed, but if you nab these simple wooden options, you can get a full gallery wall for under $100.
