You may have missed it, but the Church of Scientology has been google bombed.
Go do a search for "Dangerous Cult" in google and see what happens.
In case it disappears, I took a screenshot and posted it here.

That's funny. Bet they're not happy.

It's still there though - 10.15am Sydney time.

I see though that if you follow the link, the Scientology website is "temporarily unavailable".

Great explanation of Google Bomb on your post there too Swollen Pickles.  Thanks for that.  I've never heard of it before.

Can they really appeal to Google?  After all, it's obviously what people are saying about them.

I'd never heard of that before either. How does that happen?  I mean they wouldn't have had that as a keyword on their website would they?

If enough people link to a site using certain words (anchor text) in the link, then that site is deemed "relevant" for that term.

A classic example was some time ago when searching for the term "miserable failure" would bring up a link to Bush's biography on the Whitehouse site, despite the fact that the words weren't even used on the page.

see http://searchengineland.com/070125-230048.php and
http://searchenginewatch.com/showPage.html?page=3296101

Wikipedia also explain the term http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_bomb

Hey, does this discussion break the forum rule on "no religious debates"?   xwink

I personally don't think so ....for a very obvious reason!

Well, I don't see anyone debating, but this is actually more about the google bombing than anything else. rwink

By the way, I am working - at a workshop with my client and she wanted to find out about something for her blog so I posted a message here and am waiting on answers.

Hi,

for myself, I hesitate to mention that particular group myself because of their propensity to react legally.

Some people are afraid of spiders, snakes and scorpions. I fear aggressive stupidity, for it kills more people than most of the things that people are commonly afraid of rsmiley

Cheers, Andrew

The fact that we need a law to convince people to wear seatbelts, helmets, etc.. is proof of this kind of stupidity. Seriously, if you don't have enough sense to wear your seatbelt or a helmet?  xshocked xshocked :rshocked: :rshocked: You're just passing time here on Earth until you get your own little shrine by the side of the road. I only hope you don't take anyone with you when you go.

The icing on the cake for me with Tom was jumping up and down on Oprah's couch when they were talking about Katie. I know, nothing to do with Google bombing but I remember it got blogged about heaps.

I've been holding back my scurrilous comments on scientology and Tom Cruise all day so i'm having a good giggle now at the other comments on this thread.

I'll continue to hold back.  I did, however, ignore my spellchecker which told me to capitalise the word "scientology".  Some things just don't deserve to be treated as proper nouns. Or proper anything...  xwink

(Except now, of course, my head is filled with the scientology episode of John Safran vs God.)

No matter how much I hate Scientology you have to admit they are great at making money

Nancy Cartwright is speaking at an event I've been invited to in the US at end of April.  I can't get there yet - lack of funds, but if I find a sponsor to get me over there for a speaking engagement or two, then I will attend.  Interesting who seems to get caught up with this scientology thing.
