...but is there such a thing as a traditional Australia Day meal? I know that Sam Kekovich wants lamb to be *the* meal, however, from the little information that I can gather from out there, the norm is to just have the standard barbecue, with sausages, prawns and the like.

That being said, what would you recommend I make in honour of the day? There are some prawns in the freezer - about 350g, and that cooking outside is quite unlikely as it is winter, with snow (and rain tossed in for good measure) in the forecast, but reasonably warm weather - max. predicted is -3C, compared to it getting as low as about -25C the last couple of days. :wink2:

Any tips? :001_smile:

I'm all for making lamb the national "meat" for Australia Day.    thumbup1

Us being sheep farmers has nothing whatsoever to do with that of course.....  xwink

We're having lamb chops (our own) and snags (made from a friends cow) on the barbie.  I figure that's Aussie AND local.

Oh, that doesn't really help you does it Sephy????

Hi Sephyroth,

if it helps - Donna and I had fried-up leftover Cantonese takeaway for breakfast (with Turkish coffee, naturally!) and fried up some Kransky/Lime and Coriander Sausages for lunch (served on buttered bread, garnished with tomato sauce and fried garlic, and accompanied by a skinny vodka-tonic). Dinner we're not sure about yet.

It's all Aussie rsmiley

Cheers, Andrew

In our house Australia Day was always a BBQ, and pavlova! Lots of beer too, but food wise it was always a barbie and pav...not a lot of help...maybe a snag under the grill with a bit of tomato sauce? Pav isn't too hard to make so long as you have the fruit for the top...maybe just a pie and sauce? Roast lamb is good and given the weather it could work out well...we're actually going out for dinner with one of my girls and a couple of the grandkiddies tonight for an Australian smorgasboard apparently. My daughter booked us in and rang me to let me know, but I have no idea what's on the menu, she didn't say...I'm hoping they don't have Emu fricasee, grilled possum or something equally as feral??

We're having a lamb roast for dinner (tomorrow night since its still Friday night here). Nice and Aussie but fits in with the winter weather.

Mind you its not nearly as bad as your weather, Sephy. Our maximum was 24C today and everyone was wearing beanies and gloves and complaining about how freezing it was.

Well, compared to our months over 45C in the summer I guess it is..

Anyway, go the lamb I say. With some mint sauce. Yum!

Um I just woke up and ate vegimite on toast! I guess that is pretty Australian....

I always used to have a bbq though when I was back in Australia with a mix of whatever people brought!

Happy Australia Day!

Oh what i'd do for a decent leg of lamb! Up here it's mostly mutton *yuck!!*
Mmmmm...sweet, juicy lamb, juices in the gravy when you make it, with mint jelly on the side? YUMMO!! When I left Victoria I was living in Warragul and you get some of the best lamb you could wish for down there....I'm jealous Lightening, really jealous! And now I'm hungry too! My mission this coming week will be to find a REAL leg of lamb!

Here's what we're having. I was tempted by the lamb, but couldn't resist the novelty of these:

Damper?

Scones with Jam and Cream?

Pikelets?

Oh my goodness I nearly forgot the Lamington!

...and someone should ask I suppose - what happened to Tasmania? rsmiley

For dinner we're having chicken breasts (currently marinating in soy, oyster sauce, garlic and golden syrup), steamed baby bok choi and thai basil, and roasted-then-mashed sweet potato.

Andrew I have to say that sounds quite appetising! Particularly the baby bok choi...I love Asian greens because you can do so much with them in a short period of time if you're in a hurry...
I did wonder about Tassie, but on looking closer decided it was what seems to be a little bit extra on the end of Victoria....

xembarassed I just meant, burger's shaped like this will be doing well to remain intact for the duration. I expect Far North QLD will be a casualty as well. Someone suggested Vic looked a bit elongated....

The whole of Nth QLD has been a casualty in more ways than it could be this time let me tell you! I love it up here, but it can be somewhat insular at times!

Hi Anonymum,

I'm fond of baby bok choi too - and there is this other stuff that tastes quite wonderful too (not sure what to call it, long stalks with small cabbage-like leaves that stick out from the sides like basil). Stir-fried with garlic and oyster sauce it is one of my favourite steak-accompaniments ever. Tonight I'm probably going to just steam it - the marinade from the chicken will supply enough flavour for everything, and the roast sweet potato mash helps too.

Now, as to the little bit extra on the end of Victoria... rsmiley It is easy to forget Tasmania in graphic/product design as the rest of the country fits into a rough sort of rectangle nicely - but it is something we should probably make an effort to include, even when it sticks out a little.

Best regards, Andrew

Ok, so it sounds like I should look for something to do with lamb - I've seen chops in the store, so I might just get those depending on how expensive it is cos I honestly have no idea how much they charge for it - I've had it before at one of those Brazilian restaurants where they have folks walking around with meat on big sticks and just slice it off for you (Fogo de Chão, if you're curious :wink2:).

Anyone have recipes for lamb or prawns that might be good to try out?

Also, I found a recipe for lamingtons here; all we'd need to get is the sponge cake, but we have another dessert that might get made.

However, Andrew's chicken sounds good as well - that might be on the plans for one day this week... :001_smile:

And, I'm going to try to get a stop in at the World Market to pick up some of the double choc Tim-Tams cos they're still on sale for 1/2 price. xgrin

Hi Sephyroth,

that Fogo de Chão sounds like my kind of place - I mentioned it to Donna and she said "far out, sounds like a sushi train!" A sushi train where they come to you and it's all roast meat... man, I would think that I'd died and gone to heaven rsmiley

The chicken turned out really well - I'll upload some photos when I can and link back here.

Best regards, Andrew

So, we did wind up finding lamb - shanks were available for $3.98/lb. (~$8.75/kg), so we got one, and that's going to be dinner tonight (though here we do use dinner and supper interchangeably :wink2:). I did some looking on my favourite recipe site - Recipezaar, and I found this recipe - which sounds really good to make - I just have to start making it now I think! :001_smile:

I'll be sure to take some photos, of course

Edit - Actually, a change of plans - we're going to make it tomorrow, but hey, it's supposed to be a long weekend, right?  xgrin
