Are the two related? Does one make the other worse? Or does one make the other better?

I first started blogging on Xanga a couple of years ago... (Feel free to check it out www.xanga.com/captiv8j), and I kind of lead a second life with my insomnia. Made some really interesting contacts (Can you call them friends?) all over the world.  No one in my private (Analog) world knew of my online (digital) world...  Not sure if the advice I got and being able to vent helped me sleep... but I'm pretty sure it did... Then again... I spend a POO load of time online...instead of sleeping.

Before I go totally manic on Posting, blogging and replying... What's your experience with blogging so far....? Has it helped? Is it healthy? What are the new etiquettes?

I am now in the process of organising a family reunion in the Philippines in 2010... I'm using a blog, and I'm really interested to see how this technology can be applied to organising something that is usually traumatic, politcial, disruptive... and brings up a lot of old baggage.

Well, I am definitely getting a lot less sleep since I started blogging, because I've been staying up late blogging and forum-ing (that should be a word  xtongue)

For me, its mostly because night time after the kids have gone to bed is the only time its quiet.

I suspect there's quite a few people fitting blogging around their offline lives (work, kids, whatever). Sometimes staying up late is the only way to keep up with your blogging

Sometimes staying up late is the only time I have to work on my web stuff. Sometimes I find it a nice distraction.

I must admit that blogging hasn't affected my sleeping patterns.  As soon as it hits 10pm my eyes start to close and I drag myself off to bed.  That probably has a lot to do with getting up at 6:15am every morning to walk the dogs.

It's beginning to effect me - and I'm glad someone mentioned this actually. But as I've got a few other things on my mind at the moment, if they weren't a factor, perhaps the blogging thing wouldn't be too.

It's coming down to a bit of a crisis in choice - do I blog so much as I currently am, or cut it back?

I find that I'm watching less tv  because i'm in front of the computer more blogging etc. Sometimes I have to turn the computer and the modem off so I force myself to not get on it.

Like Jaycee, I'm watching much less television.

Some studies say that using a computer before bedtime isn't helpful for sleep. You're better off taking a bit of time away from the computer to wnd down before bed.

When I blog, I don't sleep because my mind jumps from one thing to another, when I don't blog I don't sleep because my mind is looking to the next post anyway!
Yeah, blogging has created havoc with my sleep patterns either way!

I can't work out if my addiction helps mine or causes it.  I tend to write in the mornings when my brain is fresh.  But I tend to read at night as a distraction, particularly if I'm having trouble sleeping (although that is rare these days as my sleep is medicated).  I rarely watch TV these days although I'm trying to turn the computer off earlier at night to see if that helps.

I'd say that blogging contributes to my insomnia - the weight of unmet work/blog/life tasks adds up and preys upon a mind already battered by caffeine and the odd drink. Gary Barber (Tuna) blogged about symptoms of overwork in a brilliant article - a list of signs you’re working too much - and my take on it is Signs you’re overworked.

Blog work is work too.

Cheers, Andrew

I don't have TV and I don't blog in the evenings and generally don't look at a screen at all.

I realise I'm fortunate in being able to do this as I'm on the Internet all day with no other distractions. I don't generally have trouble sleeping for which I'm grateful and I really think being able to switch off for a few hours helps.

Sympathise with others though. I've certainly experienced it myself in the past.

For some reason most of my best ideas come at night. It doesn't affect my sleeping ... but blogging does mean that I sometimes dont do some things. Unfortunately there are only so many hours in the day!

Well my blogs not launched yet, but I do tend to do most computer things late at night.

I am on the computer almost all day at work doing work stuff and then don't get to do a lot of my things until everyone else is in bed. Thats my quiet time.

Once I actually do get to bed I am usually so tired that I do sleep OK, but have always battled with insomnia so its all relative anyway I suppose.

I have had insomnia for years, I often go for weeks and only sleep 4-5 hours a night.
Most days I am up at 2-3 am, on a good night I sleep till 4.30.

Years ago there was nothing to do but watch all those late night informercials that seem to think all viewers are fat, hairy and have acne. So blogging has been really good for my sleep problems, I get a lot done, I meet lots of interesting people and it keeps me from getting down about not being able to sleep. I don't watch TV as much thankfully.

Mostly, no, blogging doesn't disturb my sleep patterns too much.

Fiction writing, on the other hand... I get my best ideas while a) working hard on actual paid work and b) trying to sleep. VERY annoying.

I spend a lot of time in front of my computer. I watch a little TV but haven't watched much of it for many years.  Blogging tends to take over the time I used to spend curled up with books, and I don't spend as much time out in the garden as I used to - I do enough to keep the garden looking alive and colourful but the weeds are there longer than they used to be, before I go out and remove them.

I do get sleep and haven't as yet had problems sleeping but I guess if I did have a problem, blogging would be a great time passer.

I've never been good at sleeping, and I often feel better and get more done the less sleep I have.  I'm sure as i get older many doctor's will tell me that that isn't a healthy way to live.  But it works for me.

Often Ii find I write best in the middle of the night, when there is nothing around to distract me and my mind is a little more open.

I like blogging during the dark hours. It is a time that is my own. I am by nature an early riser and enjoy that time. Other insomniacial times are also good for blogging. I am not obsessed, but I do have other priorities for most of my waking hours. I have to be pragmatic during the hours that my employer and my family expect other things.

I screwed up my sleep patterns before I started blogging.  Of course, discovering the joys of blogging and reading blogs hasn't helped me fix that.

What's a sleep pattern?

I never did quite get the hang of that concept. I do get enough sleep though - when I am tired but not by the clock.

Breastfeeding twins screwed up my sleep patterns first then blogging helped me keep it that way. I cannot drag myself away till very very late some nights.
