This article arrived in my inbox yesterday morning.  It is from the Wall Street Journal and feature our own Darren Prowse.

http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB120036638439890355.html

The new advertising methods they mention in here sound very interesting, but I fear that they are going to be US centric and therefore not suitable for Aussie bloggers.

Thanks - its an interesting article. I hope those audio ads don't take off though. That would be really annoying!

I have to admit that was my first concern too - opening a site to have an ad blasted at you???  Mind you, we put up with it on television don't we?  It'll be interesting to see what happens.

If they are paying per 1000 plays and the ad is on auto play are they actually able to tell if I've heard it.? Can they tell if turn my speaker down?  Or if it's even on?

I don't like the idea of the audio ads either - there's another thread on audio on blogs and I think the general consensus was that they were annoying. The video ads are an interesting idea if they are tacked onto youtube or something. I think people are pretty used to ads on TV and its pretty similar to that. As long as they donīt play automatically. I think that is what turns people off - not having the choice whether to watch or not.

They can not tell these things.  All they can track is the number of times it has been played and the number of users who click on the ad.

Well, if I was an advertiser, I doubt I'd pay for an advert nobody will hear.  But hey, if it works...

Auto Load Audio = Auto Close Site for me, whether its 5 seconds or 5 minutes I do not care it is goneskies.

Also, as for putting up with it on the TV that is true, however when I am watching TV I am not listening to music or a podcast on my laptop as I am when I surf the web.  So it is a different kettle of fish.

Personally I hope the audio ads thing dies a very quick death as it will be flooded with content that 90% of the worlds population could not give two hoots about.

Audio ads that automatically play on blogs would pretty much immediately be deleted from my feed reader.  I sit with Boo while doing my 'entertainment' blog surfing and I don't always remember to turn off the sound.

Ad's in general don't bother me.  Except if they are noisy or flashing.

The problem I have with Audio Ads is that it slows the load of sites and often detracts from the content.  Hence I get rid of them immeiately.  Thus the content is not even read and a potential reader is lost from the blog.

Similarly flashing ads and popups have the same effect.  In a land where content is king having invasive and often ugly content is just diabolical.

I've heard some of the audio ads - made me cringe a lot - mainly an accent thing.

I don't even like audio/visual presentations/tutorials - they tend to go far to slow for me and I would much rather skim read things. Download limits in Australia also make me very careful - with 4-5  heavy internet users at home the top download plans are not even enough.

A site with too many image and textual ads tends to put me off and I don't linger long; video advertising bugs me even more.

This for me is brand new and I couldn't see if anyone else is using it, but I joined up as an affiliate which pays you every time someone visits your blog, no clicking necessary. Once your page loads the visitor hears a 5 second audio ad and you get paid. Goes live this month so I will be able to fill you on how well it works later.

So far I've mad a whole 2 cents, 1 cent from 3 plays on my sites and the other from twenty plays on the 2nd tier. They reckon that as it takes off there will be a lot more plays.

I have been streaming radio in my hotel room (why not, free internet and all?) and have dropped in on a few blogs and got subjected to Taco Bell ads.

Message to Taco Bell  .... these ads will ensure I never eat at Taco Bell!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately I reckon that audio ads will be here to stay, unless you can prove to Taco Bell that it is turning people away.
