Hi,

I like Sue's idea of people voting on a post rather than a blog/blogger because it means that Pligg could be used with much less customisation rsmiley We could set up this year's comp faster, and next year's could run all-year round - people could submit posts as they come across them (and the blogies admins could delete any that were not within the constraints of the competition at any time).

In other words, imagine a Bloggerati or The Blog Link where the categories were set by us ("Best Blog Post In A Seeded Roll"), we weed out the non-Australian posts (if this is what we're doing), and anyone can vote up to the cut-off time. We could/could even manually administer new users such that you have to be a member of the forums to get an account on blogies.com.au, though this is a bit of administrative overhead - this would mean creating accounts for all 300+ of us and emailing out passwords (unless some cleverer coder than I can create a single logon system for both platforms/domains, which is a scary thing).

Cheers, Andrew

I think the idea of voting on posts and not blogs/bloggers is a great one.

I find it daunting, personally. Nominating / voting / judging ######### blog posts as opposed to ### blogs seems impossible.  As does setting the criteria.  And it would just seem like another social bookmarking process.  I think specifying a few award categories as specifically for posts would be good, but if the whole thing was post driven, I would probably lose interest.

But that's just me.

I tend to agree that including individual posts is moving away from the original direction...

I'd like to see an award for quality of reading in each category.  This is a particular love of mine - words used well.

So "Best Writing", then?  When I first read "quality of reading", I thought you were talking typography.  xwink

I do like the idea of best post in particular categories because it would be a good way to recognise blogs that might not otherwise be nominated or recognise posts that might fit one category when the blog as whole doesn't (eg a best humour post on a blog that might not be considered a humour blog)

But I agree that if the whole focus is on posts and if its voted year round it is drifting closer to stumbleupon and digg. I think the primary focus should be on blogs but with a few post categories as well.

Plus I think we should be careful not to make the whole thing too big to handle and not do the best job we can on a manageable project. Some of the ideas that come out of this process might be good for down the track, but maybe not straight away.

It seems that one of the first jobs of the committee when its formed will be to determine what the purpose and focus of the awards will be.

Hi folks,

just so as to avoid any confusion surrounding my earlier suggestion rsmiley

"vote on posts not blogs" seems to have been tied to the optional suggestion "run the competition all-year round" and taken to mean "Andrew wants us to run an Australian version of Digg".

I am not sure that this necessarily follows rsmiley

For a start, Digg (as far as I am aware) doesn't give out bLogies. Or any other awards.

Second, "run the competition all-year round" was an optional addition, not a vital part of the core argument. That is what I meant by "could" - and I apologise for any confusion that this may have caused.

So... if we totally separated out "vote on posts not blogs" from all the other stuff, and let it sink or swim purely on its own merits, does it look any more attractive?

For myself - I know that I've written some truly remarkable posts (I know this because they are the ones that people remark on) in amongst a lot of not-so-remarkable ones, and if it were purely on overall average blogworthiness then we could probably just go straight to the Aussie Top 100 Index and settle the bLogies without too much fuss at all.

Best regards, Andrew

I wasn't really thinking about it being an all year round thing.  i was more thinking about the sheer enormity of trying to choose the best posts for an entire year from all the blogs out there.  I do however like the idea of there being some post categories as well as the more traditional awards categories.

the other reason I'd prefer it to be blog-focussed rather than post focussed is because there are plenty of ways to give praise / credit / awards / thanks for posts all the time.  The overall work bloggers do to make their blog great, however, is something that gets acknowledged less.  IMO, anyway.  xwink

It concerns me that the results may be predictable and a reproduction of the top 100 Australian bloggers etc

If a voting system was used for a post component of the competition then choosing would just happen as a matter of course with the inbuilt voting capabilities of a program like Pligg.

There is of course the option to have a Digg type component to the forums that is separate to the Awards - not sure how much maintenance this would need though - if it is just an install and forget type thing or whether moderation and admin of it would be too great.

Craig - that seems like a pretty good list of categories to me.  Obviously, best use of the Irish language is not relevant to us.  xsmiley

Leaving aside the "Best Use of the Irish Language in a Blog" that's a pretty good list to wrok off.  We're going to get moving on this soon.

Er, as Ian typed.  Obviously more quickly than me.  xembarassed

The bloggies - http://2008.bloggies.com/ have been running for 8 years now.

Has anyone thought about contacting them to see if they'd do an Australian division ?
