I'm actually really interesting in this - there is obviously a huge community here in Aussieland and it would be nice to recognise the quality here.

Hi Lee,

I am interested too - please do not take my flippant remark for a lack of interest rsmiley

We need a catchy title for the award - AusBloggies? Golden Quokkas? Or we could just call them "The Darrens" in honour of our resident number 1 Aussie blogger and ask him to be our patron rsmiley

What do you think? Some award types might be:
- contribution to Australian blogging
- best niche article
- best personal article

Best regards, Andrew

I've tossed this around with a few people in the past. My reluctance has been:

1. the time required
2. the technical skills
3. impartiality
4. $$ for prizes (& technology)
5. categories
6. snarkiness
7. voting vs judging (impartial panel)
8. apathy

all = too hard basket rwink

Hi Meg,

I can set up a voting site (like thebloglink.com) in a couple of hours, populated with a set of categories that we could determine. There may be Pligg-like multiple option voting functionality available for SMF even. It would then be a matter of people registering and voting - and if it were internal to the forums, they wouldn't even need to register. That takes care of the technology rsmiley

Snarkiness is unavoidable I guess.

Impartiality is guaranteed if we keep it to a straight vote (unless there are sickos that register multiple times to vote for themselves).

Prizes would need to be sought from sponsors - and we could make it clear to everyone that they are sponsoring the AusBloggies, not the forum.

Apathy is a potential issue - and the key I think is to promote it vigorously such that it happens anyway. If we all mentioned it (there must be more than 200 blogs between members) then we can get a good start on it. We could even join the voting platform (Pligg or SMF) to Entrecard and promote it that way rsmiley

Best regards, Andrew

I'm happy to help out if we all decide to do it.  But I'm thinking maybe June/July, not a couple of hours. rsmiley

Lani,

there have been a couple of big sets of awards in the last month or so - I agree that it needs to be left a little while rsmiley

I had to read my comment a couple of times before I realised how that sounded LOL - I wasn't implying anything that's just the way I talk - actually being one of my favourite words.

As I said I'm keen but I also agree that this is a long time thing rather than something to organise in the near future but that doesn't mean we can't throw ideas around.

Oh, this sounds like fun! You member numbers here are increasing everyday so by June/July the following would be huge! Plus a lot of us have readers that are not neccessarily on the forums...and they have readers who arn`t us or on the forums! I am sure it wouldn`t take much for it to get it around the Australian blogging sphere!

I will try to come up with some good names too! Fair Dinkum blogies?

I think it is very hard to have a fair award scheme for Australian blogs ... but I still think it is a nice way to promote the Oz blogosphere a bit ...
Am happy to help down the line if needed ...

If it would be worth doing then it should benefit as many people as possible.

Eg the Good Uni guide where what is good changes every year so who wins changes every year.  This seems like a good idea.

I think it would be good to find a way to highlight those not well known.  Otherwise Darren Rowse gets the prize (well deserved but hardly news).

bLogies - what an excellent and appropriate name. It is certainly something worth thinking about, but I agree that to be done well and as fairly as possible it is not something to be jumped into quickly. Waiting for membership to grow and blog readers to increase would help too.

I think we should look into how to judge it.  These voting competitions are easily manipulated, especially if you have a pile of credits for another site that may be useful to other bloggers, for example Entrecard credits.  I do not have a criteria, nor an idea on how to judge it, but it is something that would need nutting out.

We'd probably run a poll here on the forums. Every member would get one vote, to make it fair. rwink

Competitions like this are more about fun than anything else.

Love the name bLogies.  xlaugh

I agree that the competitions are a bit of fun, but its important to keep everything transparent. There's bound to be at least one person who gets the "poops" because they don't think its fair.

As for categories and criteria, it really depends on what the purpose of the awards are - just for a laugh or to really recognise people doing good work, or to get the word out to the wider blogosphere about some great Aussie blogs... I don't know the answer to that - its something for everyone to decide together I guess.

I think the danger of keeping it too "in-house" to the forums is that it might make it look a bit cliquey. Absolutely we should recognise within the forums the blogs of members that we love, but if we want to start some really good Aussie Bloggers awards then we should try to get a many Aussie Bloggers involved, including those who haven't yet discovered the joys of the forum! xcheesy

Just my opinion xwink It'll be good to get lots of views on what they should be and I agree down the track when the forum's a bit more mature get them going.

Sounds like some good fun! Would be good to promote Australian blogs in some way.  There are blog awards in other places around the world for all sorts of categories, so why not Aussies?  Love the proposed name!

Someone should snap up blogies.com.au then before it gets poached.

I am happy to help out in any way I can with this (to the extent oy my limited abilities  xtongue)

I don't think I am able to register a .com.au address without an ABN and I don't know if its better done through a more formal channel xhuh

We should grab .com too. Doh - just checked and its taken.  xcry
