I must admit that it is something I have thought about - and the article is very thoughtful and worth a read.

Best regards, Andrew

No problem.

PS 2 examples of "Advertise with Us" pages that work:

1. Mine :-) - http://www.bhatt.id.au

2. http://www.shoemoney.com/advertising-on-shoemoney/

I like how shoemoney shows the different "zones" for ads as a graphic. I plan to copy that technique soon.

The one *slight* misgiving I have about advertiser pages as such is that potential advertisers (naturally) want disclosure of how many page views the site would get in an average week or month. Many people (such as myself) don't really want to go shouting that out for all to see......

(you see, I am a lady. I don't talk about my conquests/ loving devotee's in such a manner rwink)

(You think I'm jesting...I'm not ....really...)

Otherwise I'm all for it. As I've been saying to Meg in emails, I've been started to be asked this question anyway! I should be informed!

I just don't know *what* I'd charge!

Now that's tricky ... I guess for rule of thumb ask yourself how much $$ they're likely to get out of it per month and charge a % of that.

If you truly have no idea how much to charge than offer deals like: "1 fortnight free ad trial" and then ask them to make a bid to continue

Is something like the estimated link value on dnScoop a useful guide if you're not sure what your price point should be?

I would say don't bother with dnscoop or any other automated calculator

Seriously pricing is an individual thing ... it depends on how much value you're providing to the advertiser

Here's an example: on my Top Gear page I'm providing really good value to the advertiser because their products are exactly the type of thing my readers ask me about

On the other hand for site wide ads my price is not very high per 1000 views because there is no direct link between the content and the ads

Also don't make the mistake of pricing yourself too low. This can be seen as a sign that you don't value your site/content/opinion

That was my thoughts in the beginning too, but at the end of the day I didn't want advertisers clicking around looking for numbers and not finding them. Making people email can make the whole process long and drawn out. And if my sites gets a decent lot of traffic it is worth it - even though some of my competitor sites get a lot more traffic.

Cool!  I just looked at that site out of interest and it's saying a link on my site is worth $5!  I was expecting it to say 50c.....LOL.

From dnscoop.com (emphasis mine):

Quote
The estimated value of a single link on www.lighteningonline.com is: $5 /month

If you were to sell 8 links on www.lighteningonline.com, you could generate $40/month in revenue for your website.

I'm pretty sure that's for you, not the advertiser. Note this is an extimate for Text Link Ads, which means it's based on passing PageRank to the advertise. That means there's danger of getting the Google Slap...

I don't believe dnscoop.com for pricing.  My links are selling at $36 per month via TLA, but DNScoop only puts them at $5.. so I think their algo is off... i've found TLA pretty good with pricing.. unfortunately their tool is down at the moment (http://www.text-link-ads.com/link_calculator.php) Linkworth have a calculator too.. http://www.linkworth.com/tools/linkquote.php

Caclulators can give you a ball park amount, but as suggested, you need to take a few other factors into consideration.  I ran "Lightening Online" through another calculator, and it came up with a price of $13.95 for run of site.  Linkworth said $5-$15 for a homepage link, $50-$60 for run of site.   I've sold a lot through linkworth and their "run of site" figures are pretty much fantasy.

Just checking your site (really nice by the way!!) I'd probably start with $10 per link on the homepage per month, and $15 run of site.   If you don't get any bites in a month or so, I'd run a "special" at %30 off, see what happens.

I don't sell direct (I've been thinking I need to as I keep getting folks leaving me comments on blogs asking for it) and I'm pretty much going to use what TLA are asking.    I'm still looking for a technological solution I can roll out easily over my blog network, with the level of automation I want it to have.. haven't found anything I like yet!!

Cheers

Julia

Thanks again Neerav.

You keep coming up with excellent resources.  Some of the stuff in the article is beyond - like how I woud actually set them up on my blog.  But that's another story for another post.

Thanks also Cornflower Lani for the site estimating ad prices.  I didn't think they would even find my blog.  But I got figures in $3-5/mth range.  Which is encouraging.

Thanks to all.

Hi Julia,

the LinkWorth one doesn't seem to work either.
