Pink is not just a colour - it's an ATTITUDE!!!!!!

WWW
« on: January 10, 2008, 10:17:24 am »

You may all bow down to my greatness now.  I am typing this from my newly downloaded Firefox browser.   :biggrinjester:  And I've just discovered I need to open the extra smileys window in this browser and not try to use the IE that I already have open!  Embarrassed  Methinks I have a few too many things happening on this here computer at once.  I'm getting all confused!!

Now, do I have to download the stumbleupon and alexa toolbars again to have them in this browser?

And can I have tabs like I do in IE?  How do I do that?

Once you've got a tab open in firefox, you simply right click, and choose your options. You can bookmark, reload or new tab to name but a few...

I would suggest only using one browser at a time. Confusing yes, for both you and the computer! And, you will not know which browser has which history, favourites, etc. I have no experience with stumbleupon and alexa, I'm sorry I can't help you with that.

Cheers

Re: IE - if you are fond of how IE renders some sites but still want to use Firefox there is a plugin that will embed an instance of IE in a FireFox Tab.  Confusing to describe but easy to install and use - see screenshot for example, noting IE icon circled at the bottom.

The addon is available at: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

RE: StumbleUpon and Alexa Toolbars - yes all toolbars would need to be reinstalled as this is a completely different program.  You can export your bookmarks from one and import to the other if you like, or alternatively you could use an online bookmarking tool like Del.icio.us (which can tie into your Firefox browser too https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3615) or Google Bookmarks, which can tie into the Google Toolbar.

RE: Tabs - Yes Firefox does tabs too.  I personally prefer to have the tab bar showing at all times, which can be set in the preferences Tools --> Options --> Tabs --> Tick Always Show Tab Bar.  Double-Clicking on the tab bar will also open a blank tab.

I much prefer Firefox. I find that it loads quicker and is more intuitive. It is like many programmes. When you get used to it, it is hard to give it up. Horses for courses I suppose. I only use IE when there are some incompatible applications such as ordering for my kids school bookclub, which I was coordinator for. Their system was incompatible with Firefox.

If you have an icon that has a green cross in it (maybe six from the left), that will open a new tab.

It also took me some months to realise that clicking a link with the the track wheel on my mouse opens a new tab  Embarrassed

For the ambidextrous amongst everyone, there is always the option of holding control (or on Macs, command) and clicking on a link to open it in a new tab.

Also, if you want a new blank tab (or with your homepage in it, depending on your settings), you can type Ctrl+T :001_smile:

Hi Bettina

You can change the size of text quite easily in FireFox. If you click on "View" in the menu options, you should see the option "Text Size". Try increasing it there.

I've just noticed something else.  When I first switched to wordpress, it seemed to take ages for things to load when I was trying to compose or edit a post.  Today I've noticed it seems much faster.  Is it possible this is due to firefox?  This is my first time using the firefox browser to compose on my blog.  I'm just wondering because I know others have mentioned a similar problem (finding wordpress a lot slower than blogger).

press CTRL+ to increase size

OR

press CTRL- to increase size

Either can be pressed multiple times to keep increasing/decreasing further until you can read the text as you like it

The TinyMCE editor that a lot of folks use to compose posts is pretty hefty and can take a while to pull across the net. Once it's in the cache,  it usually loads much quicker.

Thanks macgirvin.  Does that mean everytime I clear my cache it'll take longer to load the next time?

There are a gazillion little shortcuts, aren't there?

Here's my Firefox tip of the day:

CTRL + TAB cycles through any open tabs (like ALT + TAB does through programs on your PC)

Okay, my work here is done.

Alternatively, you can hold onto Ctrl, while using your mouse wheel to scroll up or down (to decrease/increase font size). Just don't scroll too fast rsmiley

maybe we need a sticky post where we can compile a whole list of shortcuts for firefox 'dummies' etc - so new members/ bloggers can find them easily - that way the thread won't be buried by newer posts.

Um, yeah, I am a Firefox fan too - I can recommend a few add-ons though. Adblock Plus is great, as is FasterFox. I also use All-in-One Sidebar to show my listing of bookmarks without chopping too much off the top and bottom of the viewing area - but bear in mind that it won't make much difference on a small screen.

How do you find/get add-ons for firefox?
