I am just testing this...

My sister just told me about Qtrax.

The site says the Beta download will be available Midnight EST (I assume that's US, so in about 6 hours) so it will be interesting to have a look at it.  At first glance, it looks like it's a Mozilla based browser which can be used for downloading & organising tracks, as well as general web browsing. Sony BMG, Universal, EMI & Warner are on board and costs will be covered by advertising.

I'm not sure how that advertising will be delivered but from their press release...

"Qtrax's initial revenue projections range from a low of $20 million to a high of $175 million. Record labels will get an equal split of advertising revenue in addition to the royalty fees it collects from Qtrax."

Interesting.

Hi Lani,

I am slightly sceptical - the qtrax.com domain name is owned by a company in Kowloon/HK (which is not a bad thing in and of itself, but curious given the mix of big companies that are said to be on board).

It would be good if it were true - I look forward to finding out rsmiley

Cheers, Andrew

Found this on Techcrunch.  Seems that it relies on a proprietary player and the downloads aren't compatible with ipods.

xlaugh  I didn't even think of the spammy sound of the title or the post.  I haven't gone to the dark side.  It genuinely did think it was interesting.  Maybe I should re-write the whole thing.  Or report myself to a moderator.  xembarassed

Thanks for the Techcrunch link, Ian.  Whether the downloads would be compatible with all types of mp3 players was the first question I had when looking around the site.  It seems the stupidity continues...

Hmm.. Another interesting tidbit, from the comment thread in the Techcrunch article...

Warner, UMG: No Deals With Free Music Service QTrax

Seems Qtrax might have overstated their contract situation.  All in all, not exactly a great launch.  xlaugh

It would seem to me that free/legal song downloads are the internet equivalent of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Yeah well I may need to moderate myself when I say this..

There was a smiley of walking male genitalia. I didn't add it to the board because I felt it was quite inappropriate. Had I added it, I would use it to describe the writer of that article on Techcrunch. rsmiley He is the world's stupidest walking male genitalia.. and that isn't a compliment in any way.

 xgrin xgrin

I tried to keep it clean, honest! But after he took content from the pay per post forums and posted it on his blog, most of the words I would use to describe him are very rude and at least three of them are banned here.

I must say, that's the most polite insult I've ever seen! Impressive!

Walking male genitalia. Oh that so appealed. That expression is so snagged. Thanks.  :rgrin:
