Okay....another question from the newbie....

I discovered this site, a free gallery software program.  Looked good, downloaded it.

Can't for the life of me work out how to get it onto the website.  It promised to be easy.  Somewhere along the line I figured out that I didn't have, and needed, php, so I downloaded that...didn't get anywhere.

First question - has anyone used this, or any other INTEGRATABLE gallery code, on any of their sites?  Bearing in mind that if we can figure out how to make this work, the gallery will form the *basis* for the entire site (photos etc) - so a big thing.

Second - Can someone check out the site and tell me if it really is supposed to be as easy as they claim but also give me an idea of what is required on my end, in terms of installed whatsits to make it work?  I found a list of what I'm meant to have before Gallery will work but i gave up after the php thing and am a bit miffed at myself for not knowing more about it all.  So if someone has an experience with this kind of thing, it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Cheers,
Lizzie

Hi Lizzie,

the requirements for the gallery program say:
Quote
A brief overview of the requirements of Gallery 1 and Gallery 2:

    * Platform - UNIX (BSD, Linux, ...) or Windows
    * Webserver - Apache, Microsoft IIS, Zeus, ...
    * PHP - PHP version 4.3.0 or greater (Gallery 1.x requires PHP 4.1.0 or greater), PHP safe_mode must be turned off
    * Image Processing Library - In order to automatically generate thumbnails and resized versions of your photos, Gallery requires either ImageMagick or NetPBM. Gallery 2 additionally supports GD and GraphicsMagick
    * Database (Gallery 2 only) - MySQL 3.x, 4.x or 5.x, PostgreSQL 7.x or 8.x, Oracle 9i or 10g, DB2 8.2, MS SQL Server 2005 (Gallery 1.x does NOT require a database)

You mention that you downloaded PHP.

Probably a strange question to ask, and please do not take this as any sort of criticism - but: do you have all of the above on the webserver where your blog is? The reason I ask is that you have posted this in a Blogger forum and Blogger won't allow you to install all this stuff on a blogspot.com hosted blog. If you have Blogger running on your own server setup then it may be possible to get the gallery code working. Otherwise you may need a separate setup.

Best regards, Andrew

I have used that gallery script a few times in the past and for me (someone with experience installing and using php scripts) it was easy and straight forward to install and set up. Just a matter of uploading the files via ftp to your account and following the automated setup. If you are not comfortable with installing scripts, it may not be as easy as they quote.

Not sure exactly what your requirements are, or what your using it for but perhaps one of the flash or flickr based galleries would be easier to set up and install and would integrate easier with your site?

Andrew -

You're right, I'm way out of my depth.  xtongue  I realised that very, very quickly.

Leigh -

I came across a couple of flash examples and yes, I think it will be easier.  Do you have a recommendation?  I've fired off an email to Snoskred so perhaps she'll be able to set something up for me privately (Wordpress) or give me some more advice.

Cheers,
Lizzie

I'm looking into photo albums and watermarking plugins just lately, so I do have some ideas, but more on that when I have more time, I've sent Lizzie an email. rwink
