Thanks snos for your kind words. I have just done another post in my "image series" too Search for Free Images - this time I concentrate on search tools that look for images you can use without worrying about copyright - those that have Creative Commons Licences. This is sometimes better than going to a particular free stock image site as multiple sites are searched.

Nice post, it's good to see someone else finally mention Wikipedia images. I get a lot of stuff from Wiki, it's a great resource, especially for photos that aren't your usual 'stock' photography of generic models in business suits pointing at the sky rcheesy

A lot of organisations have put images on Flickr with "no known copyright restrictions".

I've found some wonderful stuff from the Smithsonian Institution during the great depresision and second world war. Granted these aren't your normal stock photos and you'd be hard pressed to find an image of precisely what you were looking for. Having said that, many of these archives are national treasures. Explore them, use them, share them.

One that may be of interest in this forum is

+1 for Flickr. I always look for the photos that are "attribution only" licensed so that I could edit them as I pleased. In fact Flickr is so good I have never had to use anything else. Wikipedia is a good idea though, will give it a try - thanks for the tip.

My vote goes to Flickr also for its ease of use and wide variety of content. Also very easy to post pictures to Blogger (takes 2 clicks once you've set it up).

I am now regularly using compfight to find  creative commons Flicker photos - much quicker than searching Flicker itself.

Hi  I've been here for about an hour now.  New to the site and I'm really delighted with the generosity of its contributors.  How do I advertise this site on my blog?  Where do I go for a badge or something along that line?
In the meantime I'll keep searching.
best wishes & thanks again  rsmiley

Just took the plunge and bought an image for a post for the first time via istockphoto - in time for Valentines Day.  It wasn't all that expensive, in the end.  In the process I discovered they do have a 'free photo of the week', and this week's has inspired me with an idea for a post, even!  Gotta say I love the look of having that crisp photo there with no caption/attribution.  Looks amazing.

I've noticed their photos tend to be a lot more concept-based than the freebie ones, so they've come closer to matching what I want the post to say than any of the other services I've looked at.

PS Check out the really really cute male angel I found and used for my "ideas for valentines day" post!  <grin>  A little devil in me just had to do it!

I've tried compfight, very convenient indeed. It saves me LOTS of time. Recommended.
