I like swollenpickles would rather have multiple ads at some smaller sites than have 1 ad at John Chow's site.  I have read numerous reviews of the Entrecard effect from his site, and the advertisers complete and utter disappointment.  I am thus surprised people bother to drop cards on him.

What surprised me the most, was how close his entrecard widget is to his actual paid sponsors section. At least I didn't hand over cash. Otherwise I woulda been pissed off and disappointed.

SK,

for me, the point is not ad effectiveness in this particular instance but to annoy John Chow, a worthy aim in and of itself. Anyone that paid money to John for advertising would likely be disappointed - google on "the john chow effect" for a few studies of where this didn't work.

A lot of the cards demonstrate a lack of creativity.  The standard picture without text ones are often stock photos.  These characters are reliant on the drop and runners that do not appreciate the effort and forethough.  I am with you though Lani, a simple graphic with some text, aka mine and Lightenings, conveys more information.  Mine, attached below, is proving rather successful, though I am thinking of tinkering with it further over the coming days/weeks.

I should really get around to making a better card. I put mine together very quickly and only chose the avatar that I have been using for a bit of consistency, but actually it doesn't tie in with my blog - the avatar doesn't appear anywhere and I chose it very quickly one day. I guess it would be a good idea to come up with a logo/brand as such for use across forums/blogs/etc. Or maybe its too late and I should just stick with what I've got that has some small measure of recognition?

Any recommendations would be gladly received  rsmiley

I've noticed that many of the cards are photos only and I'm not sure why.  Are people more likely to click on something when they have a vague idea what it's about, or do they just get curious when they see only an image?

I just assumed they had the same problem as me - unable to put text over their own image?  Only they don't have someone lovely like you to put the text onto the image for them.   rsmiley  I'm surprised that entrecard don't either provide a larger gallery of backgrounds OR allow you to place writing over your image within their program.  It's a little bit limiting for those with only basic computer programs/knowledge.

Here's another idea (and you could debate the ethics of it if you like, but I'm sure a lot of people have given it a try). Cancel/reject all ads and don't accept anymore until the amount of credits it costs for someone to place an ad on your site increases.
Except that one of the ads in his line-up is MINE!!!!!   rshocked

To be completely honest, I was looking at my list of cards on my entrecard dashboard and thinking that yours looked about the most appropriate. rsmiley  You have the title of your blog and a very Aussie looking picture.  Personally I like it as it is.

Don't feel like you have to use this or anything, but I knocked up a real quick one (I had time pressures rtongue ). I just used a bit of your blog header etc. I'm sure there are people much more talented that could do a much better job, but at least its different from the stock entrecard layouts.

Swollenpickles - that looks fabulous and very kind of you.  Obviously it wasn't all that clear (my fault) in my response to Lani because she did the same thing for me.   rsmiley  Isn't it lovely that there are so many kind and helpful bloggers out there.  I love the slogan you used.  Lightening - it's pink!   rgrin  I'm gonna keep it (if I can work out how) cos I might swap it for a change later or use it for something else.  Thank you so much.  I get absolutely floored by the kindness and generosity of people I've met in recent times.

I love the "it's pink!" slogan too.  It made me smile.  Which means it would probably make people click on it too.

:lol2:  That was the thing I found the hardest - thinking up a few words to put onto the entrecard.  Enough to entice people to come and check me out.  I'm going to do some testing with both versions and see what happens.  They're similar enough that I think they'd both be recognisable as "me".

I'm going to attempt to attach the other one (my first attempt so we'll see if I manage it) so others know what I'm talking about.

How lucky do I feel???  I went from tearing my hair out to having 2 wonderful options to use.   rsmiley

My only other concern is the ethics of using a portion of the header image as it's someone else's image.  My justification (to myself mostly) is that it's about my blog, related to my blog and leads people to my blog where proper acknowledgement has been given for the header image.  Do you think that is okay or am I in dodgy waters here?

Do you know what the licensing on the the header image is?

It comes from Balko headers that Snoskred now users and she got permission at the time we were setting up our blog.  Basically my understanding is that they are free to use with acknowledgement (which we've done on my blog).  The acknowledgement bit was the bit I wasn't sure about because I can't really add that to the tiny partial image I'm using.

Maybe I should email and ask directly to be sure.  Given I found them through google and now Snoskred uses them and promotes them a bit, you'd think they'd be okay with it.  But then they might not be.  Not sure.

I've gotten a few ads out now and it costs 20 points not 2 to run an ad on my blog rsmiley All up I've probably spent an hour dropping cards on other people's blogs to achieve this miracle over the last couple of days.

Pickles: did you say something to the effect that you use Entrecard over multiple blogs? Is this the equivalent of multiple accounts? Does it get in the way of their TOS?

Thanks for the feedback, Lightening. I think I will leave it as is for now, and perhaps think about incorporating the avatar onto the blog a bit more to tie in better. I did choose that avatar in the first place because it seemed quite Aussie and because my blogname means blond in Spanish. And because I am blond, obviously. rgrin

I´m finding I am running out of time to get through all these new things I´ve discovered in this forum. I keep forgetting to go drop cards and even worse to apply for the a space, which is what its all about after all. So, I´m better off leaving the card as is and actually get around to showing it somewhere!

My stats don´t show any clicks to the people who are advertising on my site yet, but that may be because they are not really related blogs. We´ll see if this all turns out to be worthwhile.

I have three blogs I wanted to use it on, but couldn't find a way to include them under the one account. So I signed up using separate emails for each blog. I pretty much only drop cards with the swollenpickles account though because I forget to log out and back in. Not sure what the TOS says about multiple accounts. I'm not sure why it would be a drama?

I noticed that a number of blogs have cards which advertise competitions for points.  I thought that was rather a clever marketing idea considering the purpose is to drive traffic to your blog.  I might try something like that down the track when I have more points (hopefully).
