Hi,
if anyone is interested, I just wrote an article on
Entrecard (and other ads) above the fold…
- it's about why widget placement matters (and why a heap of you just got tagged for a meme too!)
Cheers, Andrew
Thanks for the mention Andrew, In fact after reading your post, I moved the widget up even further - it had been gradually slipping lower because of additions on top of it.
Any idea how to lower the value of your advertising? I am only on 50 something but the number of people wanting to advertise on my site is now nil! Before I always had enough to have someone on my widget all the time.
Has anyone else discovered Joe Tech's
Entrecard Slots
- like a slot/pokie widget thingy. I have the widget on my site but am not supposed to spin my own although it is very tempting - so I go to Joe's site to do it instead. I have won a few Entrecard credits and two lots of text links on his blog so far. Just a bit of fun really with a chance to win linkbacks or ads.

I just requested an ad from you Sueblimely.
My ad requests have certainly slowed down. I guess once you've been there a while you just kind of end up in the middle of the pack there somewhere. Not sure. I think your ad price is an average of drops on you for the past 7 days so if you're not dropping, it'll gradually drop a little.
Mine just spiked up over 100 but that's because I bought an ad on a site that drove many entrecarders to my widget. Only problem with that is that 99% (if not more) of them are flyby droppers which don't gain you heaps in the long term (well, for me I'm in it to find long term readers more than simply have a higher turnover of traffic).
I won a link on those slot things but it hasn't given me any traffic that I can tell and hasn't shown up on technorati so I'm not totally convinced it was worth all that much???

I'm yet to look into the Entrecard thing, but as I was cruising around some Aussie blogs today, it was great seeing so many other Aussie blogs being promoted in the widgets. Great home grown networking in action
Also, what was apparent to me was that one really needs to put some time in to the design of the "card" make sure it's an attention grabber. Gotta put some thought into that one...

Thanks Lightening.
So it seems that the more you drop the more points you gain but the cost to advertise on your own site also goes up. I have been favoring members here recently - rather give the points to people I know.
Even though you do not get much traffic from Joe Tech type sites, a link is a link and they do add up, helping such things as pagerank and Technorati ratings.

Meg - there are advantages to Entrecard, and then there are disadvantages.
One of the advantages is visiting the sites you love regularly and dropping a card.
One of the advantages is finding great new sites while exploring the categories.
One major disadvantage is the ugliness of some of the blogs out there, the pain in the eyes after looking at some of the blog designs, and yesterday I had a site play music at me rather loudly.
I have to say when I load up all the Aussie blogs, there's none that make my eyes hurt.
But oh, some of the things I have seen!

I completely agree, Snos. I really like the idea but the bulk of the sites are painful. We need more Aussie's to sign up and improve the standards!

The good thing about it for me is that it takes me out of my reader and I actually *see* blogs again.

I've been using Entrecard for a couple of weeks and found it a great way to connect with and read blogs I wouldn't normally think of visiting.

Hi Lightening (and sorry I didn't answer your question directly Sue, it has been an interesting couple of days),
you are quite right - stop dropping for a week and your ad price drops, then people buy a heap of them and it increases again
I'm finding that if I do nothing at all mine seem to stabilise around 50 credits for an ad.
Cheers, Andrew

Done
Well I'm officially flummoxed. Most of you here are loads ahead. I've only got 10 credits. How the bleep am I supposed to do anything with that? I guess its fine if you have the time to surf around and drop cards and whatever but sheesh............time consuming
And please please somone tell me there is a way to bulk decline people because that is so slow and frustrating to do it individually all the time.
At this rate I'm going to toss it as soon as I signed up!
(I'm not cranky, as it may sound. Its just been a looooooooong week
if I drank, I'd be sinking a few right now

Hang in there. Even if all you do is have the widget on your blog, you'll generate some traffic. And drop on those blogs you're visiting anyway. And you'll find the credits start to climb for advertising. It does take a little bit of time. If you don't have much time for dropping cards, it'll take a little bit longer for your credits to climb. But it will happen. You might not end up at the top of the pile, but it's worth giving it some time to see if it makes a difference to your traffic and readership.

The ad requests will slow down and it will only take a week or so to get the advertising price higher, even with very little effort. I've really only been dropping in my normal travels around the web and built up a 1000ec withouttrying at all.
