Scares the daylights out of me

I've recently begun using Twitter more and more, something I'd avoided for quite some time.
As I've gotten into it more, I decided to use something other than the site itself, because frankly I find it quite boring to look at.
Not only that, I'm more than likely to have anything up to 10 - 12 browsers open at any one time, so another one wasn't really needed.
So I downloaded Tweetdeck.
Now, I love it, don't get me wrong, but unless I turn the volume down, every time someone tweets I lift clean out my chair.
{picture me with daylight between my bum and the chair here!!}
I see no point in turning the volume down because it defeats the purpose, which was to know when someone had done a tweet, but my poor nerves are copping a pounding.
Any ideas???

I use Twhirl - it's an AIR client too, and although it doesn't have the category features that Tweetdeck has, I find the interface much better to use. I have a single thin column open at the edge of my screen all the time, and notifications are turned off because I can glance over at any time. Or if I'm on my notebook I have it in the background, and notification popups on replies and directs turned on.
I used to use a browser sidebar extension, so I could have it open all the time, but I can't remember for the life of me what it was called.
I find that having it visible on the edge of my view, but not actively notifying me, means I don't get distracted by it - I can just look over when I want.

I thought you could untick the sound notification in the settings. I'm pretty sure I did. But I'm using Splitweet.com now as I have more than one profile these days
and I don't think that's got sound but I never have my sound on. I hate those sites that start talking at you when you visit it or something else making a noise when I least expect it.

I can, but that defeats the purpose.
I agree 200% about sites that talk to me or play music the minute I get there. It's a sure fire way to have me beat a retreat inside 2 seconds.

See, that sounds good...I can see without changing browsers, and I'm not having the bejeesus scared out of me.
I'll have to go look now...

I use Twitterfox which is a special application that runs with the Firefox browser. It just sits in a little corner at the bottom of my screen and if a new tweet comes through a little pop up window appears. No sound but the flash of the window popping up reminds me to check it.

I use Twhirl as well - it's noisy but not so noisy as to scare me - less annoying than MSN or Skype even.
