Blogging and Internet Marketing Addict!

« on: December 20, 2008, 08:24:06 pm »

Hi all,

I have been fearing the upgrade to 2.7 a fair bit, as I am still fairly new to the whole thing of WordPress and have just mastered 2.6, so I was quite scared to upgrade. But I just jumped in and did it with one of my sites (http://www.mybeachdecor.com).

Have a read what I think of the new version, and whether it is so scary or not HERE

Also, anybody who is scared of upgrading (I have just read that somebody is still using 2.3.3!), there is this super tool which does it automatically for you. READ HERE

You can always leave comments, as well  xgrin

Hope I was of some help.

I just read the posts on WordPress 2.7 in the thread before this one, and I have to say, when I upgraded, I basically had a brand new blog with no plugins (yet) and nothing. So this works really fine so far.
But in all honesty I don't know what is going to happen when I upgrade my other blogs which have quite a few plugins and stuff. I have not upgraded the others yet, so my advice is - if you got a new blog, you should be fine, if you have one with a few things happening (plugins, posts, etc.), you might just wait a little more after reading all the other posts.... xembarassed

I recommend always upgrading on a test blog running exactly what you're running before doing it on a live blog. rwink

I am about to upgrade in the next few days because my site was hacked. I hate upgrading to new version because they are generally buggy. Do you use All in One SEO? Did you have any problems with it?

I was going to do exactly that - but cannot remember the log on for my test site!

All in one SEO was one of the plugins I had to turn off - it wasn't working at all.

I own several blogs and some I only write to now and then, so I usually do test on one of these before touching my major ones - great advice.

+1 for this great advice. Touch the least important one (or the one that earns the less money) first, make sure all works, then do the rest.

Except the most important ones are going to have all of the exotic plugins, and it is the plugins that will get you.

Agree, it happened to me once that I didn't test just one (out of 15) plugin and it didn't work after upgrade rsmiley
Re having a test site, that's really playing it safe but I found it to be too much work (when you have more than one blog).

Re All in one SEO plugin, it was messed up after I upgraded to 2.7 but I had it upgraded to the latest version and it's working fine now.

Seems some forward planning is happening. They're talking about 2.8 already.
I haven't changed to 2.7 yet because plugins have been giving me grief everytime I try. I've uploaded then loaded over it 3 times already.
For a version that promised so much I'll admit to feeling a little let down.
For mine, I'd be happy to see them go back to something like the 2.3.3 version.
We can't have everything I guess, but it is nice to dream all the same

Upgraded just over a week ago and found that some of the features clashed with Automatic Upgrade (like install new plugin - you can do it directly now, no ftp).  I've disabled the plugin and it's working fine.  I do like the interface, especially the one click media link and a prominent 'write new post' button at the top of the interface page.  Very user friendly.

Word of warning - if you do a tweak and your site returns an error, you'll lose your admin interface.  I made a change to my featuers.php page which caused an error, and despite fixing the file, found my admin interface was scarily 'text only' and nothing I could do would restore it, including reinstalls.  I blogged about it here. The fix (which I eventually found after a minor panic session that no doubt scared the neighbours) was to log out of admin, then access it via a public post [edit] link.

There are also a few plugins that it will disable since they don't work with it.  Automatic upgrade wasn't one of them, and I don't remember which ones were, but I do remember that one specifically conflicted with it and the interface worked more smoothly without it (plus the new features make it almost redundant anyway).

Now if I can only get firefox 3 to work as smoothly - anyone else lost any capacity for sites to display aweber forms too?

Now that is pretty scary. rsad Some templates won't give you an edit link unless you are already logged in..

Ouch, That is why I use RoboForm. I visit way to many sites that require logins to ever keep track of them. However, for $30.00 US it solves all of my problems. It is worth every penny for me.

Except a friend of mine had her PC go belly up on her, and since she used roboform to generate as well as store the passwords, now she can't access anything!  (Think's it's the power supply, fingers crossed it'll be back up soon).

If you're going to trust software to manage your logins for you - make sure you keep a backup somewhere. Preferably somewhere different entirely!

I bought Roboform too and have used it for years but I back it up automatically on a daily basis  using GoodSync which is also made by Roboform. The Firefox extension Foxmarks which syncs your bookmarks has an option to sync passwords too. Even if you do not have another PC to sync to you can use the tool as a back up as your data is stored on their site too.

I have now begun to upgrade people I am hosting blogs for to 2.7 - it is a nightmare.

Every blog takes ages to do. Despite the fact that the majority of people are using the same package of plugins, we keep running into new, different, and annoying errors which we then have to look for solutions to. Sometimes one plugin which has worked fine on every other blog will suddenly have a fatal error and be unable to activate.

Today, wordpress.com stats suddenly decided to throw out someone's API key out of nowhere. It had not done that on any of the other blogs. Lucky it was also in Akismet, because we had not anticipated this issue - if it had not been in there I would have had to dig through all my old emails from that client to find out what the API key was. So now we have to copy that for each blog we upgrade as well. rsad

The other day, it decided not to allow the automatic plugin upgrade thingy to work. Something about not allowing the files to unzip because some other plugin was using the name of a file it wanted to use.

I will be thrilled when everyone is upgraded and life can get back to normal. As it was, the Admin and I spent the majority of today - a beautiful sunny day and his day off - swearing at wordpress..  rundecided And at the end of hours of work, we had upgraded 4 blogs. Only another 40 something to go..  rlipsrsealed

I had that - it's because it now allows install direct from the web.  I love that feature, but from playing with it the plugin needs to be direct under a zip folder, and a lot of them are two levels down.  So you end up downloading, unzipping and uploading again anyway - at least you don't need an ftp to do it anymore.

Once I disabled the WP automatic upgrade plugin (the function's built in to 2.7 anyway) I didn't get the error again.
I've not got a plugin automatic upgrade, but wordpress detects plugin upgrades & prompts me anyway.

Another 40 - nasty.
Have you managed to sort out the problems without having to resort to reinstalling the old database? Last time I had to restore a database I could not get it to work - turns out my host had to change some settings and I could not have fixed it myself, however much I tried - and I had tried and tried!
