I'm writing a rather *ahem* controversial post at the moment, and I mention several high profile people by name, and organisations.

Do they notice when you link to them? Is it worth doing? If they don't notice I may not bother, but if it will bring attention to my post I will.

What are your thoughts/experiences?

It depends - if they're attentive to their online presence, then they should have google alerts set for their name or their site's name. Also, if you're mentioning bloggers who are running WordPress blogs, then they should get the link in their incoming links section (which I assume that you already know rwink).

Of course, then there's the general search traffic that you'd get from mentioning these organisations and names, giving information to people who might be looking for help with the same issue you're having.

Nah, not blogs. Something FAR more controversial than blogging  xshocked

I'm sure some of them would have people whose job it is to do all that, so it might be worth doing links as well.

Thanks Sephy rsmiley

They will if they're doing or using things that will alert them.

Google Alert is very good for that purpose and I have something like around 30 alerts set to notify me daily of new blogposts or articles published online that relate to the topic of the alert.

I use Wordpress for my blogs and the dashboard shows incoming links so if someone links to my blog, it also shows up there.

If they also check their stats regularly it will show up there as well.  Those who need to know or want to know, will find out.

When I blogged about a childrens painting program I love* (Tux Paint) one of the software creators came and left a comment.  That was super cool, so sometimes yes people do notice, whether they comment or not is a different matter.

There are automatic programs that can notify you.

Those with popular blogs can be linked to many times a day.  They probably wouldn't have time to respond to the link - even if it was worth their time.  (It's a system problem - the popular become more popular and so everyone wants to link to those who are popular, so that they can . . . etc).

Agreed that they notice - if they are bloggers. I have not had experience with non bloggers but larger businesses would monitor media for any mentions.

Here is an interesting example of yes, sites do notice. You'll have to copy and paste the link.. rsmiley

Code:
http://www.momecentric.com/?p=256

So what happened was she linked to 87 blogs in that post, some of them fairly high profile bloggers in the "mommyblogging" world and it was all about the blogher conference and how you had to be a part of the popular crowd to go there. A lot of the bloggers showed up and commented because they all felt like she'd called them out by asking them a fairly insulting question. And yes, the question was fairly insulting because she implied that all the people she linked to were earning massive amounts of money from blogging and that because of that their writing has gone downhill - in essence, they have sold out and become boring.

It did get her traffic (and it will give her some from me posting this unfortunately but I felt like this is a good example of what we're talking about in this thread), but she's pretty much self destructed since - and made all kinds of excuses for what she did, she didn't like the comments she got, she insulted people further in posts she wrote after that.

In my opinion, if you say something on your blog then you need to have the balls to own it. You don't post it and then back away from it. The whole thing seemed very passive aggressive to me.

I'm tempted to link to the same blogs asking them something nice instead and commenting on the relative insanity that went down. But that would be a bit wrong.. rwink

She did not do herself any favors by writing that post. She may have got some fleeting attention but she is not going to gain any friends by it - looks as if Blogher is out for her in the future too   xlaugh

Yeah said attention probably went away pretty quick when further posts have been about medical issues and a lot of those with TMI. rwink

She reminds me very much of another blogger I used to read who was very passive aggressive, only she would write stuff and then delete it completely and pretend like she never wrote it, or write it then delete it then apologize for writing it and therefore people who were not around when she posted the deleted post wondered what the heck she was on about.

I think one of the rules of blogging is NEVER delete a post. And I feel the same goes for something you write on a forum as well. I know someone who once wrote a really gutsy post on a scambaiting forum, then she deleted it when people disagreed. I never respected her after that. Because if you can't take a little disagreeing with you, then you should stay off the interwebz rwink

*sigh*  This is slightly OT but I have never even HEARD of most of those "top name" bloggers on that list.   rundecided

I didn't read the whole post (too lazy) but I kinda feel for her because in a way she's right.  There is very much a "who's who" in the blogging world.  I don't know if it's meant to be that way but it's certainly how things appear.

I don't know about that.  I think you make the community you are in by leaving comments and being a regular visitor.  Sure there are some big bloggers out there but a lot of the clique stuff is just because they've been around for a while and established a long term friendship with other bloggers who have been around for ages as well.  Plus it seems people who twitter develop close friendships with other twitters and stuff.

Like our very own Coven, it is a friendship born of time.  Not so much being in the 'in' or 'out' crowd.  Just time and friendship.

Geeze I hope that makes sense.

Well, I have noticed a site link to me - unfortunately it is of Asian babes with me somehow being on their blogroll - no doubt driving a lot of Singapore men to my site in anticipation but I am trying not to notice.

The same could be said for us here on the forums though. It's not true - we welcome anyone who shows up and posts and wants to be a part of things. But some on the outside looking in might say that we are a clique.

I think blogher is no different - Missy went from here, and when she gets back maybe she can let us know if she ever felt left out or anything. I think if we went to the conference it wouldn't be cliquey. But there is that thing when someone reads a blog and feels like they know a person - they almost have a shorthand already because they know a lot about what has been going on with that person. That's not a clique thing either. rwink

Yes, any decent site will notice. Word Press has ping backs built in now I believe.

Regardless of whether its controversial, if you're just in what you say then that's fine.  The internet is no different when it comes to slander or defamation, nor should it.

It's your opinion, so put it out there.  Just be prepared for any and all results. Even the good ones.
