Don't know if my hens count as "pets" in the true sense of the word, but they more or less fill that role here rsmiley

We're also talking about adopting a kitten, a rabbit or even both.  It's a small petting zoo in the making really!

The Other Half says I can't have chickens.  Cry Cry Cry

I keep asking, but I suspect this is a lost cause.. especially now we have a balcony and no actual yard..

Look at that pretty chicken Maryanne..  rsmiley She's a real beauty!

We have a large enclosure for them but they keep escaping and I've given up on chasing them around the yard.  An offering of food is much more effective in getting them to cooperate anyway.

They're nice to have so long as you don't have any gardens that you want to keep.  We've lost some nice beds from their persistent scratching and pecking, and have resorted to enclosing everything in chicken wire that we don't want destroyed.

Our main "problem" these days is we can't possibly keep up with the supply of eggs.  As of last week we had 5 dozen in our fridge and growing.  Everyone who came by for a visit left with a dozen!

So what you're saying is a balcony is actually the perfect situation for chickens? rsmiley

I'll show this to the other half and say look, I've been good..  so chickens should come to me as a surprise.  rgrin

Don't need asking twice to brag about my 'first child'. Introducing Monty!

This photo is on Flickr and I'm supposed to link back to there but don't know how to do that with this type of code. Any ideas?

The noise might be an issue if you're living in a unit.  When they've laid an egg they tend to shout - or rather squawk - from the rooftops, which is amazingly noisy.  We've got a large yard and neighbors who also have chooks; so it's not an issue here.  But if you've got neighbors close-by it might be worth considering.

That said there might be breeds that are more quiet than others.  Off hand I don't know of what their breeds are though.

The other big issue is the smell,  If you're living in close quarters you'd want a fairly strict cleaning regiment rsmiley

Hi Jaycee,

I'm not sure if the engine this site uses will support the Flickr embed code or not, so what I did was include a text link above the image that refers to the Flickr page.

Flickr says the photo itself must link back to the page, but in lieu of that I don't see why a text link immediately preceding or following the photo wouldn't be acceptable as well.

In this case, all you have to do is copy the URL to the photo on Flickr and then from the create reply view click the insert hyperlink button in the toolbar (bottom row, third from the left).

Hope that helps.

Your chook named ginger is an Isa Brown. It's a hybrid bred to lay brown eggs....coz we all know brown eggs are healthier than white ones, don't we ? LOL

Here's our new little guy, who only arrived at our place yesterday. He's already spent a fair bit of his time on my lap in front of the computer, so you could say he's a regular already!

His name is a bone of contention - the wee man is determined to call him Stuart Little, but I have a real problem calling a cat Stuart! rtongue My moniker of choice is Fergal. He might have to live with a split personality for a while - the wee man says he'll call him Fergal when he's "not Little anymore".  rgrin

Heh, our kitties have several names too. They only ones that actually get used with any kind of regularity are "the boy" and "the girl" rsmiley

Aww those are all so adorable! I'm a cat-obsessed person, and my blog has heaps of photos of my Puddy (female ex-feral cat) but let me find one for here...

Hehe always a lady, my Puddy.

Let me find a nicer one:

That's her lying on my study sheets while I was attempting to cram for an exam. She wanted attention, methinks.  rtongue
