I'm planning to write a series of posts on how to use GIMP for fairly simple but effective graphics manipulations. For example, modifying a photo (cropping, resizing) and creating an animated gif.

But I thought that I might finish up missing some obvious stuff that bloggers would tend to want to do in a graphics program - but not necessarily know how. Soooo... any suggestions, lovely people? Stuff that you don't know how to do? Stuff that you do know how to do, but always have others asking you about? etc?

I know nothing, so interested to hear what you have to say. I only use Irfan View and Picasa.

I use photoshop for graphics - logos/banners, backgrounds and images for sidebar sections in particular, but I'm interested in reading whatever you have to share and sucking you dry of knowledge  xwink There's always more to learn, different effects etc.

I just made myself the theme I have now, and am feel like doing another one - mainly because I enjoy it - sad really  xembarassed,

Hmmm... any more detail you can give here? Like, what do you tend to struggle with?

I have basic Photoshop skills, I would love to know how to make the swirls, or do you need Illustrator to do that? I just downloaded pre made brushes to have those swirls.

I would also love to learn easy ways to convert photos to vector  xgrin Is tracing using the pen tool the only way?  xcry

Stuff like how to put a photo in the body of the text and postion text around it.  Probably very basic (but I don't know how to do it).

Evan, that's done using HTML, not a graphics programme. They're two different things completely.

The stylesheet.css file in Wordpress sometimes will have the HTML for images, so their placement remains consistant or you can do it in your posts as you go along.

Am at work, or I'd explain what to do fully - will try to later on tonight, but i have a teenage son to fight with first  xgrin

Of course, if anyone else wants to jump in here, feel free!

I do believe you completely Suze.  Though this is a matter of faith as I have no idea what you are saying.

Is Gimp easy to learn if you know Photoshop? I have been tempted to download it and give it a try but know that it would distract me from doing anything else. I would be determined to learn it. If it is much like PS then I can just use it  xsmiley

In my opinion, yes. There ARE things you can do in Photoshop that you can't do easily or well in GIMP (standard download - there may be extensions that work beautifully). But once I got the hang of the interface differences I found the basic stuff really easy. Like, cropping, resizing, recolouring images - near identical. Adding text, easy (although not as many features). Ummm... anything 3D-ish or complicated tends to be more difficult or near impossible. Sorry I can't think of more examples!
