Being extraordinarily lazy, I often just go to Wikimedia Commons

istockphoto.com is one we use quite a bit at work and the photos aren't too expensive, especially for websites.

I have used Stock Exchange for many years as a source of Royalty free photos

Some of my photos are on there as well and one has been used as the cover of a childrens book :-)

Another good source is Flickr providing you abide by the photographers creative commmons licence agreement

I've had an account with istockphoto.com for years and is the primary place I go for myself and my clients - they always have great stock!

Hi I was just looking for photos in Flickr to use in a blog post and I was looking for some help with atrributing to the author properly.

The photo I want to use is on an attribution license, so it says I can distribute and adapt the work.

I am going to put a frame on it and also use the link back to the flickr photo page when I insert it into the post.

Does anyone know if this is enough for that license or should I also put a note saying "photo by [flickrname]"?

The US government is a great source for high quality Public Domain image.  This page has links to some of the most useful image collections.

Oh, and if you don't already have more than enough places to look, you could go through this extremely long list...

Another resource out there are some 3000 images that the Library of Congress put up on Flickr - all released in the public domain; a lot of these pictures have appeared on sites like Shorpy, in higher resolutions than the ones on Flickr, though.

The thing about the images, though, is that they're all from the early 1900s - about half from 1910s and the other half (in color) from the 1930s and 40s. :001_smile:

I write about the stock photography market on my blog, though a little more from the contributor side than the buyer perspective. I've reviewed all the cheap stock photography (microstock) vendors worth looking at.  iStockphoto is one of the best, but not the cheapest.

If you don't want to bother going to my blog, here's are two others that I recommend for bloggers:

Dreamstime

I have to put my hand up for istockphoto.com as well. I only ever need the small images so am only paying about $1.6AUD per image which is not bad. I think they have really added a bit of extra life into my blog.

I will have to take a squiz at some of the free ones too, thanks for the links.

I'm totally sold on the Creative Commons at Flickr now.  Don't think I'll ever need to go elsewhere.

The links for CC searches by the way are:

search page for Attribution Licensed photos
search page for Attribution-NoDerivs Licensed photos
search page for Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs licensed photos
search page for Attribution-NonCommercial licensed photos
search page for Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike licensed photos
search page for Attribution-ShareAlike licensed photos

Thanks I found some photos there I liked that I may use sometime.  It was lovely a photo of yours was used for a book.  I haven't had a look further to see if there are any like our photos we have at home, maybe sometime I will consider submitting some.  Thanks again.
