Well, love it or hate it, it's now out there for all an sundry. Be interesting to see the reaction from those on W/press.com once they upgrade everyone

I upgraded earlier today on a couple of blogs using the Instant Upgrade Plugin with no problems at all.

So far so good. I quite like the new interface, although it will take a little while to get used to. I'm an "early adopter" though, so I enjoy exploring new programs etc.

Time will tell how well its received. I'm sure there'll be lots of initial complaints but people will get used to it eventually.

there's already been some discussion on here, and the reaction seems to be mixed...I'm going to sit back and wait to see what happens....I haven't tried an upgrade yet! Bit of a scary thought!

I upgraded PolyBlogging to see what would happen - I would warn users of the WP Automatic Upgrade plugin that it is not entirely compatible with WP2.5 - it requires manual re-activation of plugins.

Apart from that, there are the same old WordPress 2.5 admin interface usability issues.

Can someone please shoot me now.  :rlipsrsealed:

They make it available the day after the other half goes back to work. He was on holidays for three weeks during which he would have had plenty of time to check this out on a test blog. Now he's back at work, and he's going to be pretty unthrilled at spending his spare time testing this to make sure it works with everything.

Those of you who are hosted with me, I'll send out an email when I have some spare time about this upgrade.

I upgraded this morning and it's fine IMO. Different sure, but I'm ok with it.

Happy Cog can kiss my happy *ss - I use draft posts to keep track of posting ideas, safe in the knowledge that when I go to the Write screen, all my posting ideas are there waiting for me.

Not any more - they've 'fixed' this in 2.5.

Good grief.

So does this mean you can't see your drafts in the write screen anymore?

A link to your drafts is available from the dashboard, but not from the write page as far as I can see.

Yep, there's a link on the dashboard. Also on the RH side of the write post screen there is a list headed "Related"... under that is a "View Drafts" link. Is that what you meant Andrew?

And there is more pain - please see WordPress 2.5: Its here, its queer, it wants another beer!.

Snos and Guera: I can go into the "show me my drafts" view, but there used to be links at the top of the Write Post screen to the last few drafts. That is where I liked them.

They need shootin'.

Ok, sounds like another case of leave it for at least 2 weeks before even playing with it, considering the links and photo issues..

I would roll eyes here.

They've had an extra 2+ weeks and they still couldn't get it working right before releasing it.

Plus it looks like there's an absolute shedload of issues with it - http://wordpress.org/support/forum/3

What's really annoying (to me, at least) is that if you choose to stick with a stable version of the program, you have this announcement that "A new version of WordPress is available! Please update now." I can understand that for a security-related upgrade, but this is one that they shouldn't be sticking that in our faces for.

Speaking of sticking with 2.3 - will they be continuing support of it beyond today?

Also, just a couple of bizarre things that I've noticed - first, they released the new version on a Saturday - pretty strange if you ask me, even if it is a piece of free technology.

Second, does anyone actually know someone who was asked to be a part of whatever interviews they did in order to come up with this new design? I'm still not sure who they were targetting this redesign towards...

As far as upgrading, I've volunteered to bite the bullet and upgrade on my testing blog to see how things go with it as far as plugins, etc. However, I don't think I'll be upgrading my main blog anytime in the near future.

Yesterday I attended WordCampDallas2008 where the WP upgrade was discussed, including screen shots showing the changes to the write panel. I'm not liking this at all!

One of the things discussed was how the upgrade removes special coding within uploaded images (since I'm not a photographer, I didn't understand the gibberish they spoke of), and they are saying that it will help with page load time amongst other things I didn't understand.

I do not like the upgrade and the changes being made. It is true that they have removed many of the buttons on the write screen, saying that "most people wouldn't use those anyway". I don't know about that, but I've been working hard to learn what each of those buttons are for and what they do in order to decide for myself which I'll use or not. I don't like that they have swept those buttons off the screen.

My biggest complaint is the changes made to the write screen. I like it how it is now! I do not like how they've changed the pre-publishing choices to the drop down menu, or the way they've changed the edit the date and time feature. And the upgrade removes the post Draft feature....not a good move WordPress bigshots!

I do NOT want this upgrade. Lorelle on Wordpress spoke at WordCamp and mentioned some things about the upgrade she doesn't like either, so hopefully she'll make a post on that soon. I'm more interested in what options will be GIVEN rather than those taken away. Argh.

I just checked responses - there was one from one of the WordPress forum admins telling me that I was the problem, it works fine for him. Good grief.

Yeah you totally have to love that answer. rwink If it works fine for me, then you must be the problem.

That is great logic, along the lines of -

all cats have four legs.
my dog has four legs.
therefore my dog is a cat.

Ok - Darren Rowse put a link to this post -

10 Things You Need To Know About Wordpress 2.5

I have also gone in and played with it on a test blog. The more I use it, the less I like it. Just a few points of note -

Has anyone even looked at the widget screen yet - now found in design --> widgets? What the heck is up with that? Seriously. What were they thinking? I don't even know how that is going to work, how am I going to explain to anyone else how that works? Everyone was used to the drag and drop thing. Why get rid of that for something so confusing?

What is with the orange and anemic blue?

Popularity Contest can't be activated due to a fatal error.

What about this automatic plugin upgrade? That won't work on any of my blogs because the server does not allow Wordpress to create its own file permissions - nor should it. This opens all kinds of security holes and I wouldn't recommend that anyone uses it. But how do you even know if you are using it or not? Can this - as one commentor on the post says - break your blog while you are asleep?

As far as I can see there is only one improvement in this upgrade, and that is the appearance of Akismet items on the front page when you log in. That will help a lot of bloggers who forget they are running Akismet, or forget to check it.

That's a mere 1%. The other 99% I utterly hate, and I am really angry that they have taken something usable and turned it into something supposedly "better" but not very usable at all.

Do you have to upgrade - if its not to fix security issues can you stay with what you've got?

But then if there is a security upgrade, say 2.5.1, would that then automatically upgrade you to 2.5??? It would wouldn't it, unless its just a patch or similar???
