Bonfires In My Head

How pathetic is this.

A plugin that I have been using for a while to solve a problem of wanting a small amount of posts on the front page but more posts on archive and categories pages is different posts per page.

It is a part of the standard package of plugins that I install for my bloggers.

Today I was installing a blog and I went to adjust the amount of posts on the front page. I noticed that instead of the usual options there was a screen saying "almost done"

Step 1:
A confirmation email has been sent to your email "(not my email address by the way, the email address of the blog I was setting up". You must click on the link inside the email to activate the plugin.

So I need the plugin for the blogs, and I followed the step required. When the confirmation email arrived, it has a link in it. I clicked the link and it took me to this absolutely pathetic hard sell page.

http://www.maxblogpress.com/oto/2/index.html

Imagine that. A plugin writer who is pathetic enough to do this to people using their plugin. Perhaps the headline should read -

New Research Reveals That 2% of Plugin Writers Suffer From the Pathetic Need To Sell Absolutely Useless Things To The People Who Use Their Plugins (PNTSAUTTTPWUTP) Disease, And The Writer Of The Different Posts Per Page Plugin Is Be One of Them!

I am now not updating this plugin any further - it still works on version 1.6 for the time being - while looking for an alternative.

StephenCronin - any thoughts? rwink

That is definitely a major turnoff.  I'm all appreciation for plugin authors who share there work so generously.  I can even understand a desire to get a return on their investment but that sure sounds like an awfully counter-productive way to go about it.

Hi Snos,

I'm coming in a little late here - sounds like you already have a solution.

The MaxBlogPress people have a bit of a bad name apparently. I didn't catch the details, but I saw some say on the Codex that they were trying to spam the official WordPress Plugin repository.

Anyway, the Different Posts Per Page is released under the GPL license. That means anyone in the world can take the plugin, change it, then release it under the same license. So, in theory, someone could take the plugin, strip out the registration stuff, then release it to the world.

I'm sure it would be possible - although I don't know how much work it would be. I probably don't have enough time to do it myself at the moment (I have real time issues), but maybe someone else will?

Amazingly, he's actually honest about his intentions somewhere - this interview that I found -

Quote
About monetizing, plugins helps me build a good subscribers list.
That’s my main focus for now. Having a list opens up many ways to
monetize in future. Currently I’m monetizing my list by recommending
some other good blogging products.

As I said on my site - by doing what he's doing, he isn't making any friends...
