Author Topic: 'Cutting' posts and hiding the rest of it behind a link  (Read 726 times)

I wasn't sure exactly how to describe this! So it was impossible to search for a previous post.

I would like to have the ability to write long posts but not have the entire post shown on the page, instead hide it behind a link saying 'click here for more', like a lj-cut for those who know LJ.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me, thanks rsmiley

Easy to do Anead.  There's a "more" tag.  In the WordPress visual editor there is a button that looks like 2 boxes with a line between them (next to the little tree) and you click that when your cursor is in the place you want to split the post.

If you work in the code view, the code to do this is...
Code:
<!--more-->

What text it displays (like "read more" or "read the rest of this post") depends on your theme.  If you want to change that, see this thread..  Read More link

Hope that helps.

(And hello.  I don't think I've spoken to you before.  xgrin  zwelcome2)

No worries.  The other thing you might want to consider when using the "more" function is that it effects your feeds, cutting the post there so your subscribers can't see the full text.

One of our members here created a plugin that helps you get around this... you can read about that here...   Re: A question about Partial Feeds

Apparently one of the things that will change with WP 2.5 is that it will revert to not creating partial feeds when the more tag is used.

A couple of links on it - Planet Ozh - CaveMonkey50

I started using more tags on a new blog I've got because I knew this was coming. I just hope they finally release it soon so my feeds will be full again.  xsmiley

Guera,

THANK YOU for this. I knew I had to test my plugins with 2.5, but this may be a real issue for DualFeeds which strips the more tag out. It may either have no effect, or it may break the plugin totally.

Thanks for letting me know. Now I just need time to install 2.5 and get to testing...
