Theme Problem
«
on:
February 24, 2008, 09:49:17 am »
OK, the theme is called Hal 5.0 by miloIIIIVII and I love it because it has three columns and because the it's great for showing off photos and such. I use the theme on my
Scenic Adelaide
but it has two minor flaws. One is when you choose a category and everything does not line up properly...
example
... and the other is in the comments section which has a nifty feature of highlighting the authors comments except that the colors chosen are crappy and my comments are hard to see.....
example
....
I assume the problem lies in the CSS but I know stuff all about it and didn't want to stuff everything up completely. I know this is a big ask as not many people probably use the same theme but I figured what the heck.

Not sure about the category layout but you should be able to change your comments by altering the background colour here (found on your stylesheet)
Code:
.commenttext-admin {
background:#CCCCCC none repeat scroll 0%;
clear:both;
margin:5px 0pt 20px;
padding:20px 10px 5px;
width:365px;

Meg, you are a bloody gem! Where the heck is my grovel icon?
Never thought to look there.
That fixed the comment section at least. Thanks heaps Meg.
As for the other problem, I've noticed that it works fine in IE and only plays up in FireFox

Sire, I'm just looking at it now but Firebug won't let me play with the css. I can see it, but not edit it as I would normally be able to. Do you have it locked in some way?

What's Firebug and as far as I know the answer to that is not that I know of.

Yeah, I had said run-in with the creator of this theme (and tons of other themes). Basically, I went and redid one of her themes and made the fatal error of linking back to the original post that mentioned the theme on her site. You can read about the changes I made to the theme
here
, but you can't download it because I was asked to take the download down - she didn't appreciate me releasing it without me asking for her explicit permission. Ironically, if I hadn't linked to her post, she probably would have never known about it (unless she has a google alert set for her name).
As far as the CSS issue, first off, I feel for you since I've worked on her CSS files in the past - they're one big bundled mess when you try to edit it. What I'll do is edit the CSS file for your theme to a more, ahem, appropriate, format (i.e. one argument per line, instead of
everything
on one line), upload it and PM you the link so you can download the file and put it on your server. It will make making any changes now and in the future a heck of a lot easier. :wink2:
Also, just quietly, it will make anyone "playing" with the file in Firebug have an easier time as well.
However, just a couple of thoughts on the layout -
First, I'd recommend making the comments section the same width as the blog entry; the way it looks now seems (in my opinion) a bit clunky.
Second, again, my opinion only, the little float box that appears when you hover over a link is really annoying - I'd much rather have a regular tooltip.

Sephy, your a gem. I noticed that the css was all lumped together but i thought that was normal. Yous said a female did this, must have been a bloke in her previous life don't you think?
I will play around with your suggestions to see if I can fix it. All except for the hover thingy as I have no idea how to get rid of it.

She was so incredibly nasty to Sephy that I told him he should publish it all on his blog. Being the gentleman that he is, he didn't do it. But I still think he should.
The theme originally had swear words hidden in the graphic which is one of the major reasons Sephy did the overhaul.
I don't believe anyone should be so unpleasant about someone else taking a theme and making changes to it. Once you release a theme it is out there for public consumption and you cannot guarantee it will be seen exactly as you originally created it. If you want to keep it exactly as it is, then you should not release it.
Ironically this chick had an invitation for people to post their versions of her themes in her forums. So it is ok to put it there, and not anywhere else?
Clearly, a delicate genius.. (roll eyes)

The other irony about her themes is that all the themes that she releases are released with the GPL licence - in other words, you're free to modify it as long as you keep in who did it. Of course, that covers the themes that are released with a license - most of them aren't.
Also, the F--- THIS wasn't exactly hidden - you could see it quite well. It was the biography of the random person which was hidden
I think I will post about it after all

Unfortunately there are wankers in the world and there isn't too much we can do about it. Thanks for the help Sephy. I've uploaded the new css and its a lot easier to read but i reckon I am just too dumb to understand it all

Okay, looks like a pretty easy fix. I still can't edit using firebug. (Weird???) But using my web developer toolbar simply removing the float from contenttitle fixed it.
this section here..
Code:
.contenttitle {
float: left;
text-decoration:none;
width: 90%;
margin: 0;
padding: 0 0 0 5px;
}
delete the line
Code:
float: left;

No need to worry about lightening bolts from me. I'll just turn you into a stag and sic the hounds upon you.
But how I knew isn't actually much credit to me. I have a Firefox extension called
Firebug
which lets me "inspect" the CSS. By clicking on the the part of the screen I want to work with, like your post title, it tells me which parts of the stylesheet is effecting it. It takes out a lot of the trial and error.
If you're interested in that side of things, Snosk listed a tutorial:
