Technorati Ranking
«
on:
March 01, 2008, 03:05:42 pm »
Is the Technorati ranking tied exactly to the authority? Because my authority hasn't dropped but my ranking has by about 20,000. What would cause this?
ETA: As in it was around 53,000 and something and is now 73,000 and something

My understanding is that it is related. I suspect there may be a glitch, because I checked a couple of blogs that have less authority than you (97), and yet their rank is 69,101. Another with 94 is 71,974. It happens sometimes. Maybe give it a day or so & hopefully it will right itself.

Thanks Meg. I've been hanging out, hoping it might creep up above the 50,000 mark so it was somewhat of a shock to see that. It's a bit soon for it to be heading in the wrong direction!!!
I'll see what happens I guess. Nothing I can do about it anyway.

Isn't it supposed to rank everyone with the same authority with the same rank? That's how I understand it. Even then, though, that doesn't explain how some with lower authority seem to have higher ranks as you've found with a quick search.
Aw, doesn't matter. With an authority of 2 I don't have to worry too much just yet!

Panic stations over. It's back to "normal" this morning. Thank goodness. I don't know what happened. I'm just glad it's over.

It could have picked better timing to stuff up though. Looks like my mistake ranking has been used for this months Top 100 Australian Women Bloggers list.
Oh well, hopefully next month I'll get a nice little "bonus" boost.
I really shouldn't care so much about stuff like this should I????
I need to get a life don't I???
Yeah, I know. I just needed to have a little sook about it........ Is there a pouting smiley???

Hi Lightening,
it is hard when things like this happen - you have my sympathies. I used to care a lot about rankings myself and I know how disappointing it is when they don't come up to expectations.
I believe that all of life is a game, but bits of it are not so much fun.
Better luck next month.
Best regards, Andrew

I don't really trust Technorati, useful that it is. I look around at bloggers with huge link farm type posts and limited content with rankings of over 400. My friends also plummeted recently from over 100 to less than 40. My family still loves me however. It is very easy to get sucked in to how we are judged by the stat/ranking/ sites. Our blogs and us are worth much more than that.

Thanks for the sympathy Andrew. You're right. We win some we lose some and this in the scheme of things doesn't really matter. I'm sure I'll be over it in the morning....or at least by the time the next lot of rankings come out.
Clutterbells - very wise words. Rankings are interesting and fun but don't necessarily reflect a blogs content. Not that I have a clue what a link farm post is....

I h.ave no idea how I got to no 7 in the top 100 this week - how things may be different from last week. I keep thinking that a mistake has been made and I will plunge right out of the list. I do not seem to have all that many backlinks from other blogs - I sometimes wonder if it is because I tend to join up with everything and anything creating my own backlinks! I justify it in terms of research for my blog of course but really it is because if there is something new I can't resist joining and checking it out.

That's true Meg. How'd you know that's the first thing I did??? Shall I email the person and tell them they're sitting in my seat????
Knowing my mathematical skills I'll have stuffed something up in the calculation (Yeah, I know that ones a fairly simple formula but I am REALLY bad at maths - even WITH a calculator).
Congratulations Sueblimely. That's great that you did better than expected.

If it makes you feel any better Lightening, I had the same issue with my Technorati ranking and took a dive. Hopefully next month it will behave itself!

I don't really get this ranking business.
I mean, you have to sign up for various things to get a ranking (Technorati etc), which means that if you don't care about rankings you could rank poorly whilst having a very good, popular blog. Conversely, I am sure there are ways of pushing up one's rankings, if you cared enough to do so, without necessarily having a better blog.
I had never even heard of this top 100 women's bloggers until today!

I've got a blog that gets even more visitors than my VA blog. The VA blog has a good technorati ranking and is in the top 100, the other blog doesn't but has much higher visitors. There must be a better way of assessing popularity than linkage or people having Alexa or whatever on their computers.

There is google analytics and stuff as well as the Genuine Ranking one. The google one requires that you put a script on your page, which I don't know how to do.

Evan- There is a plugin that you can install that will easily include the google analytics tracking code on your blog.
Kathie- At the moment, there isn't really anything that does the job better..I wish someone would come up with something though.

That's me echoing Leigh's sentiment
The lists do have a skew towards technical/blogging sites.
