		<description>hmmm, I always assumed that vegemite was like marmite which (being a Brit) I adore!!
I will have to taste vegemite next time I am in Australia - I don&#039;t think that I had any back in March, I am sure that I would have remembered if I did! ;-)</description>

		<description>Ahhhh Vegemite... you&#039;ve hit it on the head Jen - capturing it perfectly in your photo above!  There are time when this is all I crave.  No ship I ever served on EVER left an Australian port without 4 really important things stowed onboard: &#039;Dunny&#039; Paper, Tomato Sauce, Beer and Vegemite!

The order varies of course... except the first one!  lol

		<description>I love vegemite! It is my comfort food! LUckily I could get it in Japan!

I wrote a post about vegemite yesterday actually!

My Japanese fiance eats it but almost all my other Japanese friends hate the stuff! Another friend thought it was chocolate when he was in Australia and scooped some into his mouth and was very unimpressed!</description>

		<description>I once did an exchange where I had to find things to fit each letter in the word Purple.  For U I did Unusual Flavours.  As it was going the the USA I included instructions / how to .

U = Unusual Flavours

Inside this box are wrapped packages of unusual flavours from Australia.

1. Is of course Vegemite Rather than send you a jar full of Vegemite that you may never eat I’ve sent some small snack sized portions.

My personal preference is for Vegemite on toast. You need wholegrain or wholemeal bread to best enjoy the vegemite experience, white bread is far too sweet.

Toast the bread until golden brown, and then slather with butter.

Finally spread your Vegemite, you don’t need a lot, it is a very strong flavour and a little goes a long way. Half a teaspoon or so is more than enough.

Here is a picture of Vegemite on toast – note the amount of Vegemite on the knife blade that is more than enough for one piece of toast.

Some Aussies like their Vegemite on Weetbix (a breakfast cereal made from wheat flakes pressed into a rectangular shapes). I’ve included some Weetbix for you incase you like to try this special treat, or you can just eat them for breakfast with a little milk and sugar.

2. The classic Aussie chocolate biscuit - Tim Tams. If a friend is unwell you take them Tim Tams, if a woman is suffering from PMS then Tim Tams will ease her pain. Got to go to a morning tea function where you’ve been asked to bring a plate and no time to cook – take a pack of Tim Tams

One classic way to eat Tim Tams is the “Tim Tam Slam”. Make yourself a hot drink (coffee is best) and get 1 Tim Tam. Bite off each end off your Tim Tam, then place one end into your drink and suck the other end like a straw. Best be quick as the hot drink melts the chocolate biscuit. Delicious.

3. Finally we come to the ANZAC biscuit.

ANZAC means - Australian and New Zealand Army Corps

These biscuits were first made to send to our troops overseas during WW1, as they travel very well.

My favorite recipe for ANZAC biscuits is:

1 Cup Rolled Oats
1 Cup Plain Flour
1 Cup Brown Sugar, firmly packed
½ Cup Dessicated Coconut
125g Butter
2 Tablespoons Golden Syrup
1 Tablespoon Water
½ Teaspoon Bicarbonate of Soda

1. Combine oats, sifted flour, sugar and coconut in large bowl. Combine butter, golden syrup and water in small saucepan, stir constantly over medium heat until butter is melted; stir in soda (or combine butter, golden syrup and water in microwave-proof jug, cook on HIGH for about 1 minute or until butter is melted). Stir in soda. Stir mixture into dry ingredients.

2. Place rounded teaspoons of mixture 5cm apart onto lightly greased oven trays; bake in moderately slow oven for about 20 minutes or until biscuits feel slightly firm. Use spatula to loosen biscuits on trays, cool on trays.

Makes about 25. Biscuits will keep in airtight containers for at least a week or freeze for 2 months.

I usually make a double mix of the ingredients, then instead of making individual biscuits I put the mixture into a slice tray and cook in the oven for 30 minutes on 180 degrees Celsius. Once the slice has cooled slightly I cut into squares. It comes out a bit softer and chewier this way.
