Popularity of photo blogs

I was interested to note that out of the top five Top 100 Aussie blogs, two of these are photography blogs. Also interesting to note is that these two photography blogs are ‘how to’ blogs.

The blogs are Digital Photography School and Photoshop Tutorials and Links. While the latter is about Photoshop, it does mainly deal with editing photos.

It got me thinking as to why blogs about photography and editing photography are so popular. I wonder if it’s as simple as there are more photographers than bloggers out there. I know since I got a Flickr account I’ve become more involved in the Flickr community with meeting real people and taking photos with them. Consequently I’ve created a new category on my blog called photos because I’m developing a real interest and enjoyment in it.

Of course digital cameras make a huge difference. If we had to take photos with film, get it developed then scanned to a digital format I’ll bet lots of people wouldn’t bother.

So you’ve learned about taking photos and how to edit them afterwards, but now you want to incorporate them into a portfolio and blogging is the perfect way to do this.

A blog I’ve been reading for a while is Boudist. Daniel Boud – the author – has had a great journey of a photography hobby becoming an interesting job. Read about it.

Another Aussie photo blog I came across relatively recently is Neil Creek – Photographer. He also writes for the aforementioned Digital Photography School and runs photography competitions.

What other blogs that focus mainly on photography do you read – particularly Australian ones?

http://splendor-solis.com/ is an aussie photo blog I keep up to date with. I’m not so interested in learning how-to myself but I love the results on these blogs :)

Thanks for the mention of my blog in your post! I had a look at the Aussie top100 blogs, and worked out my ranking based on the formula there. Turns out I’m just outside the top 100! Very exciting, and something to work towards :)

I think the interest in photography is due equally to the ease of digital photography, the huge quantity and quality of free photographic resources online, and the strong communities that naturally devlop online, centred around photogrpahy. We’re visual creatures, and sharing our lives and what we find beautiful through digital photography is becoming second nature.

Also – GO Aussie! We’re awesome :) I’d very much like to meet and get to know more fellow Aussie bloggers, especially those into photography. I shall explore your blog in detail soon, and I’ve subscribed to your feed. Thanks again for your post!

I read Boudist as well and love the photos but also the info about musicians, especially when I was in Japan and out of touch on what

A lot of the photo blogs I do read are based in Japan, and one of my favourites is by an Australian lady, Martine, who blogs at http://www.frangipani.info/blog/. It is not just a photography blog but she has a lot of links to her work as well and she is a fantastic photographer. When I was still living in Tokyo I actually saw some of her work in person and have met her on more than a few times.

    Ta for the link Jen.

I think most photoblogs have a fairly niche audience and aren’t really that popular in the scheme of things.

But what is popular are blogs that offer a service to readers, not just show off pretty pictures. Like the two in the top 100.

I do think people like to see other peoples photos. Just look at utube and how many people watch others videos. They can see other places and never leave thier home so it is a escape in some ways. Tutoirla sites are popular because so many people need help figuring out thier cameras and what they can actualy do with them with a little knowledge.
