Thanks doesn't seem almost enough, and I don't think the government doesn't do nearly enough for those who have defended our country, nor for those they left behind.

Ian: Its ordinary people doing extraordinary things when they do step up that ARE heroes. The modesty they display over what they've done is a dead give away. I agree, that race, colour and religioon play no part in these things, and if there is a positive to be taken from it any way, this would be one of them. War sucks, period. The irony of any war to achieve peace never ceases to blow me away.

My thanks to everyone for their comments. All are apppreciated more than you know

Cheers

I've been in Geraldton for the weekend - marching in ANZAC Day, and catching up with mates - most of whom, served in one uniform or another.

Heroes is an odd word at the best of times... the canteen in which I spent most of my ANZAC Day is named after one in particular, a fella awarded the Victoria Cross after an incredible act of bravery - fighting the Japanese troops involved in WWII.

Not at any time did this fella consider himself a Hero. In fact - most people I know who have gone the extra mile for their mates (men AND women) don't really consider themselves heroes. They're just ordinary people - very much like you and me - performing some of the most selfless acts you are ever likely to witness, in the most extrordinary circumstances.

They're just normal people - until abnormal things happen - and they 'simply' step up to back their mates up most times, and just get the job done! There's no glory, no bulldust... you do these things for your mates - those few who stand about you - and this bond knows no colour, religion, cultural, political, or social crap involved when the shite hits the fan.

Some Diggers have lost a mate just recently. A wife her hubby, a mother her son... I don't like that war exists in our world today - but I don't fool myself about it either! Nor did that young fella - and I'm bloody sorry he's gone!
