I very much enjoyed reading it, although I personally don't see the forums as something having chances to make a mark online. They lack a few features that are better covered by social networks (even when they offer the possibility of more focused conversations). I think the success of a forum depends entirely on its community. But sure popularity shouldn't be what drives a user to a forum. As you say, sharing information and learning are more important.
