Blogging in the ACT
Blogging is alive and well in the ACT (Australian Capital Territory). A lot of posts get written here, but there isn’t one coherent face to the blogging community.
So how many ACT blogs are there?
Good question, and the answer varies depending on who you ask.
- The Canberra Blog Community lists 29 blogs in the ACT,
- 2blogornot2blog lists 30 (with little overlap),
- buggerall gives a heap that are in neither of the above lists,
- The Australian Index gives 184 blogs for the ACT, but does include some blogs that I know to not be in the ACT (like My Little Drummer Boys), and excludes several that are (like all of mine
), and - Blogger/blogspot.com has 1,400 profiles for ACT bloggers.
What do we blog about here?
Interestingly enough, Canberra is a microcosm of Australian blogging – we don’t just talk politics (thank goodness). It’s the usual mix of bioblogging, car blogs, nerd blogs (information architecture and social computing are fairly hot topics), cooking/recipe blogs, you name it. There are the political blogs, unavoidable in this climate, but they are in the minority.
What’s the community like?
We don’t have a lot of meetups here. Aurelius tried to organise one a while back but I couldn’t make it, and a lot of other people didn’t turn up either.
There is a CTUB (Canberra Twitter Underground Brigade) group and the IA Cocktail Hours – where most of the participants are bloggers, but it is not about blogging per se. There has been talk of a group starting under the auspices of meetup.com but nothing has come of it yet – if you’re interested, join the meetup group or see the ACT Bloggers thread on the Aussie Bloggers Forum.
I’m in if you are

I have no idea why I am listed in ACT …not sure who looks after this but am I listed in NSW blogs ??? where can I check
any mention is worthy !
Hopefully, the Aussie Bloggers Forums will develop a coherent Canberra blogging community – providing an easy way to find each other as well as methods of communication.
Hi Trish,
thank you for your comment. I’d be contacting the people in charge of the the Australian Index about that mis-listing
Any publicity is good publicity, but it would be better if the state was right
I’ve been told that this particular index is all based on self-submission, but I’ve seen a few weird errors in it. Mistakes happen
Best regards, Andrew
Hi Sue,
thank you for your comment
There are a few different social sets here – depending on where we work, and what our role is, we can be a little clannish. Most of these boundaries are broken down for WebBlast Canberra once a year – but then we go back to our communities (graphic designer, web coder, IA) and our industries (government/health, national security and so on).
I would really like to see a solid blogging community here – there is so much potential for cross-pollination.
Best regards, Andrew
what about the nurse at impactednurse.com ?
Hi Candy,
thanks for that – there are more ACT blogs than I’ve been able to find myself
Do you know Ian from Impacted Nurse? Would he mind being invited to the Aussie Bloggers Forum?
Cheers, Andrew
